About that time, Judah separated from his brothers and hooked up with a man in Adullam named Hirah.

But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the LORD's sight; so the LORD put him to death.

But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD killed him.

But Er was a wicked man in the LORD's sight, so the LORD took his life.

So Judah told Onan, "Go and sleep with your brother's widow; it's the duty of a brother-in-law to keep your brother's line alive."

Then Judah said to Onan, "Lie with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother."

And Judah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother."

Then Judah said to Er's brother Onan, "You must marry Tamar, as our law requires of the brother of a man who has died. Her first son from you will be your brother's heir."

But Onan knew that the child wouldn't be his, so whenever he slept with his brother's widow he spilled his semen on the ground so he wouldn't produce a child for his brother.

But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother.

But Onan knew that the heir would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother's wife, that he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother.

But Onan was not willing to have a child who would not be his own heir. So whenever he had intercourse with Tamar, he spilled the semen on the ground to keep her from having a baby who would belong to his brother.

GOD was much offended by what he did and also took his life.

What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so he put him to death also.

And the thing which he did displeased the LORD; therefore He killed him also.

But the LORD considered it a wicked thing for Onan to deny a child to his dead brother. So the LORD took Onan's life, too.

So Judah stepped in and told his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Live as a widow at home with your father until my son Shelah grows up." He was worried that Shelah would also end up dead, just like his brothers. So Tamar went to live with her father.

Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Live as a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up." For he thought, "He may die too, just like his brothers." So Tamar went to live in her father's house.

Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, "Remain a widow in your father's house till my son Shelah is grown." For he said, "Lest he also die like his brothers." And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.

Then Judah told Tamar, his daughter-in-law, not to marry again at that time but to return to her parents' home. She was to remain a widow until his youngest son, Shelah, was old enough to marry her. (But Judah didn't really intend to do this because he was afraid Shelah would also die, like his two brothers.) So Tamar went home to her parents.

Time passed. Judah's wife, Shua's daughter, died. When the time of mourning was over, Judah with his friend Hirah of Adullam went to Timnah for the sheep shearing.

After a long time Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep, and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.

Now in the process of time the daughter of Shua, Judah's wife, died; and Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

Tamar was told, "Your father-in-law has gone to Timnah to shear his sheep."

And it was told Tamar, saying, "Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep."

Someone told Tamar that her father-in-law had left for the sheep-shearing at Timnah.

She took off her widow's clothes, put on a veil to disguise herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim which is on the road to Timnah. She realized by now that even though Shelah was grown up, she wasn't going to be married to him.

Judah saw her and assumed she was a prostitute since she had veiled her face.

He left the road and went over to her. He said, "Let me sleep with you." He had no idea that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, "What will you pay me?"

Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, "Come now, let me sleep with you.And what will you give me to sleep with you?" she asked.

Then he turned to her by the way, and said, "Please let me come in to you"; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. So she said, "What will you give me, that you may come in to me?"

So he stopped and propositioned her to sleep with him, not realizing that she was his own daughter-in-law. "How much will you pay me?" Tamar asked.

"I'll send you," he said, "a kid goat from the flock." She said, "Not unless you give me a pledge until you send it."

"I'll send you a young goat from my flock," he said. "Will you give me something as a pledge until you send it?" she asked.

And he said, "I will send a young goat from the flock." So she said, "Will you give me a pledge till you send it?|"

"I'll send you a young goat from my flock," Judah promised. "What pledge will you give me so I can be sure you will send it?" she asked.

"So what would you want in the way of a pledge?" She said, "Your personal seal-and-cord and the staff you carry." He handed them over to her and slept with her. And she got pregnant.

He said, "What pledge should I give you?Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand," she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.

Then he said, "What pledge shall I give you?" So she said, "Your signet and cord, and your staff that is in your hand." Then he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him.

"Well, what do you want?" he inquired. She replied, "I want your identification seal, your cord, and the walking stick you are carrying." So Judah gave these items to her. She then let him sleep with her, and she became pregnant.

She then left and went home. She removed her veil and put her widow's clothes back on.

After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow's clothes again.

So she arose and went away, and laid aside her veil and put on the garments of her widowhood.

Afterward she went home, took off her veil, and put on her widow's clothing as usual.

Judah sent the kid goat by his friend from Adullam to recover the pledge from the woman. But he couldn't find her.

Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get his pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her.

And Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand, but he did not find her.

Judah asked his friend Hirah the Adullamite to take the young goat back to her and to pick up the pledges he had given her, but Hirah couldn't find her.

He asked the men of that place, "Where's the prostitute that used to sit by the road here near Enaim?" They said, "There's never been a prostitute here."

He asked the men who lived there, "Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?There hasn't been any shrine prostitute here," they said.

Gen.38.21

Then he asked the men of that place, saying, "Where is the harlot who was openly by the roadside?" And they said, "There was no harlot in this place."

Gen.38.21

So he asked the men who lived there, "Where can I find the prostitute who was sitting beside the road at the entrance to the village?We've never had a prostitute here," they replied.

Gen.38.22

He went back to Judah and said, "I couldn't find her. The men there said there never has been a prostitute there."

Gen.38.22

So he went back to Judah and said, "I didn't find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, 'There hasn't been any shrine prostitute here.'"

Gen.38.22

So he returned to Judah and said, "I cannot find her. Also, the men of the place said there was no harlot in this place."

Gen.38.22

So Hirah returned to Judah and told him that he couldn't find her anywhere and that the men of the village had claimed they didn't have a prostitute there.

Judah said, "Let her have it then. If we keep looking, everyone will be poking fun at us. I kept my part of the bargain--I sent the kid goat but you couldn't find her."

Then Judah said, "Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn't find her."

Gen.38.23

Then Judah said, "Let her take them for herself, lest we be shamed; for I sent this young goat and you have not found her."

Gen.38.23

"Then let her keep the pledges!" Judah exclaimed. "We tried our best to send her the goat. We'd be the laughingstock of the village if we went back again."

Three months or so later, Judah was told, "Your daughter-in-law has been playing the whore--and now she's a pregnant whore." Judah yelled, "Get her out here. Burn her up!"

About three months later Judah was told, "Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant." Judah said, "Bring her out and have her burned to death!"

And it came to pass, about three months after, that Judah was told, saying, "Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore she is with child by harlotry." So Judah said, "Bring her out and let her be burned!"

About three months later, word reached Judah that Tamar, his daughter-in-law, was pregnant as a result of prostitution. "Bring her out and burn her!" Judah shouted.

As they brought her out, she sent a message to her father-in-law, "I'm pregnant by the man who owns these things. Identify them, please. Who's the owner of the seal-and-cord and the staff?"

As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. "I am pregnant by the man who owns these," she said. And she added, "See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are."

When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, "By the man to whom these belong, I am with child." And she said, "Please determine whose these are--the signet and cord, and staff."

But as they were taking her out to kill her, she sent this message to her father-in-law: "The man who owns this identification seal and walking stick is the father of my child. Do you recognize them?"

Judah saw they were his. He said, "She's in the right; I'm in the wrong--I wouldn't let her marry my son Shelah." He never slept with her again.

Judah recognized them and said, "She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn't give her to my son Shelah." And he did not sleep with her again.

Gen.38.26

So Judah acknowledged them and said, "She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son." And he never knew her again.

Judah admitted that they were his and said, "She is more in the right than I am, because I didn't keep my promise to let her marry my son Shelah." But Judah never slept with Tamar again.

When her time came to give birth, it turned out that there were twins in her womb.

Now it came to pass, at the time for giving birth, that behold, twins were in her womb.

In due season the time of Tamar's delivery arrived, and she had twin sons.

As she was giving birth, one put his hand out; the midwife tied a red thread on his hand, saying, "This one came first."

As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, "This one came out first."

And so it was, when she was giving birth, that the one put out his hand; and the midwife took a scarlet thread and bound it on his hand, saying, "This one came out first."

As they were being born, one of them reached out his hand, and the midwife tied a scarlet thread around the wrist of the child who appeared first, saying, "This one came out first."

But then he pulled it back and his brother came out. She said, "Oh! A breakout!" So she named him Perez (Breakout).

But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, "So this is how you have broken out!" And he was named Perez.

Then it happened, as he drew back his hand, that his brother came out unexpectedly; and she said, "How did you break through? This breach be upon you!" Therefore his name was called Perez.

But then he drew back his hand, and the other baby was actually the first to be born. "What!" the midwife exclaimed. "How did you break out first?" And ever after, he was called Perez.

Then his brother came out with the red thread on his hand. They named him Zerah (Bright). [JC]

After Joseph had been taken to Egypt by the Ishmaelites, Potiphar an Egyptian, one of Pharaoh's officials and the manager of his household, bought him from them.

Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.

As it turned out, GOD was with Joseph and things went very well with him. He ended up living in the home of his Egyptian master.

The LORD was with Joseph and blessed him greatly as he served in the home of his Egyptian master.

His master recognized that GOD was with him, saw that GOD was working for good in everything he did.

When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did,

And his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made all he did to prosper in his hand.

Potiphar noticed this and realized that the LORD was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did.

He became very fond of Joseph and made him his personal aide. He put him in charge of all his personal affairs, turning everything over to him.

Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.

So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority.

So Joseph naturally became quite a favorite with him. Potiphar soon put Joseph in charge of his entire household and entrusted him with all his business dealings.

From that moment on, GOD blessed the home of the Egyptian--all because of Joseph. The blessing of GOD spread over everything he owned, at home and in the fields,

From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.

So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had in the house and in the field.

From the day Joseph was put in charge, the LORD began to bless Potiphar for Joseph's sake. All his household affairs began to run smoothly, and his crops and livestock flourished.

and all Potiphar had to concern himself with was eating three meals a day. Joseph was a strikingly handsome man.

So he left in Joseph's care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,

Thus he left all that he had in Joseph's hand, and he did not know what he had except for the bread which he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.

So Potiphar gave Joseph complete administrative responsibility over everything he owned. With Joseph there, he didn't have a worry in the world, except to decide what he wanted to eat! Now Joseph was a very handsome and well-built young man.

As time went on, his master's wife became infatuated with Joseph and one day said, "Sleep with me."

and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Come to bed with me!"

Gen.39.7

And it came to pass after these things that his master's wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, "Lie with me."

And about this time, Potiphar's wife began to desire him and invited him to sleep with her.

He wouldn't do it. He said to his master's wife, "Look, with me here, my master doesn't give a second thought to anything that goes on here--he's put me in charge of everything he owns.

But he refused. "With me in charge," he told her, "my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.

But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand.

But Joseph refused. "Look," he told her, "my master trusts me with everything in his entire household.

Gen.39.9

He treats me as an equal. The only thing he hasn't turned over to me is you. You're his wife, after all! How could I violate his trust and sin against God?"

Gen.39.9

No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?"

Gen.39.9

There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?"

Gen.39.9

No one here has more authority than I do! He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I ever do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God."

She pestered him day after day after day, but he stood his ground. He refused to go to bed with her.

And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.

Gen.39.10

So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her.

She kept putting pressure on him day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible.

On one of these days he came to the house to do his work and none of the household servants happened to be there.

One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside.

But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside,

One day, however, no one else was around when he was doing his work inside the house.

She grabbed him by his cloak, saying, "Sleep with me!" He left his coat in her hand and ran out of the house.

She caught him by his cloak and said, "Come to bed with me!" But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.

Gen.39.12

that she caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me." But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside.

She came and grabbed him by his shirt, demanding, "Sleep with me!" Joseph tore himself away, but as he did, his shirt came off. She was left holding it as he ran from the house.

When she realized that he had left his coat in her hand and run outside,

When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house,

Gen.39.13

And so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside,

When she saw that she had his shirt and that he had fled,

she called to her house servants: "Look--this Hebrew shows up and before you know it he's trying to seduce us. He tried to make love to me but I yelled as loud as I could.

she called her household servants. "Look," she said to them, "this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed.

that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, "See, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.

she began screaming. Soon all the men around the place came running. "My husband has brought this Hebrew slave here to insult us!" she sobbed. "He tried to rape me, but I screamed.

Gen.39.15

With all my yelling and screaming, he left his coat beside me here and ran outside."

When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house."

Gen.39.15

And it happened, when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside."

When he heard my loud cries, he ran and left his shirt behind with me."

She kept his coat right there until his master came home.

She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home.

So she kept his garment with her until his master came home.

She kept the shirt with her, and when her husband came home that night,

She told him the same story. She said, "The Hebrew slave, the one you brought to us, came after me and tried to use me for his plaything.

Then she told him this story: "That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me.

Then she spoke to him with words like these, saying, "The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came in to me to mock me;

she told him her story. "That Hebrew slave you've had around here tried to make a fool of me," she said.

Gen.39.18

When I yelled and screamed, he left his coat with me and ran outside."

Gen.39.18

But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house."

Gen.39.18

so it happened, as I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me and fled outside."

"I was saved only by my screams. He ran out, leaving his shirt behind!"

Gen.39.19

When his master heard his wife's story, telling him, "These are the things your slave did to me," he was furious.

Gen.39.19

When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, "This is how your slave treated me," he burned with anger.

Gen.39.19

So it was, when his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, saying, "Your servant did to me after this manner," that his anger was aroused.

After hearing his wife's story, Potiphar was furious!

Gen.39.20

Joseph's master took him and threw him into the jail where the king's prisoners were locked up. But there in jail

Then Joseph's master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison.

He took Joseph and threw him into the prison where the king's prisoners were held.

GOD was still with Joseph: He reached out in kindness to him; he put him on good terms with the head jailer.

the LORD was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.

But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

But the LORD was with Joseph there, too, and he granted Joseph favor with the chief jailer.

The head jailer put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners--he ended up managing the whole operation.

So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.

And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing.

Before long, the jailer put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison.

The head jailer gave Joseph free rein, never even checked on him, because GOD was with him; whatever he did GOD made sure it worked out for the best. [JC]

The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.

The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph's authority, because the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, the LORD made it prosper.

The chief jailer had no more worries after that, because Joseph took care of everything. The LORD was with him, making everything run smoothly and successfully.
