And he commanded them, saying, "Speak thus to my lord Esau, "Thus your servant Jacob says: "I have dwelt with Laban and stayed there until now.

He told them, "Give this message to my master Esau: `Humble greetings from your servant Jacob! I have been living with Uncle Laban until recently,

I've acquired cattle and donkeys and sheep; also men and women servants. I'm telling you all this, my master, hoping for your approval.'"

I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, menservants and maidservants. Now I am sending this message to my lord, that I may find favor in your eyes.'"

I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.""'

and now I own oxen, donkeys, sheep, goats, and many servants, both men and women. I have sent these messengers to inform you of my coming, hoping that you will be friendly to us.'"

The messengers came back to Jacob and said, "We talked to your brother Esau and he's on his way to meet you. But he has four hundred men with him."

When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, "We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him."

Then the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother Esau, and he also is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him."

The messengers returned with the news that Esau was on his way to meet Jacob--with an army of four hundred men!

Jacob was scared. Very scared. Panicked, he divided his people, sheep, cattle, and camels into two camps.

In great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups, and the flocks and herds and camels as well.

So Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies.

Jacob was terrified at the news. He divided his household, along with the flocks and herds and camels, into two camps.

He thought, "If Esau comes on the first camp and attacks it, the other camp has a chance to get away."

He thought, "If Esau comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape."

Gen.32.8

And he said, "If Esau comes to the one company and attacks it, then the other company which is left will escape."

He thought, "If Esau attacks one group, perhaps the other can escape."

And then Jacob prayed, "God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, GOD who told me, "Go back to your parents' homeland and I'll treat you well.'

Then Jacob prayed, "O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, O LORD, who said to me, 'Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,'

Then Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the LORD who said to me, "Return to your country and to your family, and I will deal well with you':

Then Jacob prayed, "O God of my grandfather Abraham and my father, Isaac--O LORD, you told me to return to my land and to my relatives, and you promised to treat me kindly.

Gen.32.10

I don't deserve all the love and loyalty you've shown me. When I left here and crossed the Jordan I only had the clothes on my back, and now look at me--two camps!

Gen.32.10

I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two groups.

Gen.32.10

I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies.

I am not worthy of all the faithfulness and unfailing love you have shown to me, your servant. When I left home, I owned nothing except a walking stick, and now my household fills two camps!

Save me, please, from the violence of my brother, my angry brother! I'm afraid he'll come and attack us all, me, the mothers and the children.

Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children.

Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and attack me and the mother with the children.

O LORD, please rescue me from my brother, Esau. I am afraid that he is coming to kill me, along with my wives and children.

You yourself said, "I will treat you well; I'll make your descendants like the sands of the sea, far too many to count.'"

But you have said, 'I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.'"

For You said, "I will surely treat you well, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude."'

But you promised to treat me kindly and to multiply my descendants until they become as numerous as the sands along the seashore--too many to count."

He slept the night there. Then he prepared a present for his brother Esau from his possessions:

Then he delivered them to the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, "Pass over before me, and put some distance between successive droves."

He told his servants to lead them on ahead, each group of animals by itself, separated by a distance in between.

Then he instructed the first one out: "When my brother Esau comes close and asks, "Who is your master? Where are you going? Who owns these?'

He instructed the one in the lead: "When my brother Esau meets you and asks, 'To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?'

And he commanded the first one, saying, "When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, "To whom do you belong, and where are you going? Whose are these in front of you?'

He gave these instructions to the men leading the first group: "When you meet Esau, he will ask, `Where are you going? Whose servants are you? Whose animals are these?'

-answer him like this, "Your servant Jacob. They are a gift to my master Esau. He's on his way.'"

then you are to say, 'They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.'"

then you shall say, "They are your servant Jacob's. It is a present sent to my lord Esau; and behold, he also is behind us."'

You should reply, `These belong to your servant Jacob. They are a present for his master Esau! He is coming right behind us.'"

He gave the same instructions to the second servant and to the third--to each in turn as they set out with their herds:

He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: "You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.

So he commanded the second, the third, and all who followed the droves, saying, "In this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him;

Jacob gave the same instructions to each of the herdsmen and told them, "You are all to say the same thing to Esau when you see him.

"Say "Your servant Jacob is on his way behind us.'" He thought, "I will soften him up with the succession of gifts. Then when he sees me face-to-face, maybe he'll be glad to welcome me."

And be sure to say, 'Your servant Jacob is coming behind us.'" For he thought, "I will pacify him with these gifts I am sending on ahead; later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me."

and also say, "Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us."' For he said, "I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me."

And be sure to say, `Your servant Jacob is right behind us.'" Jacob's plan was to appease Esau with the presents before meeting him face to face. "Perhaps," Jacob hoped, "he will be friendly to us."

So his gifts went before him while he settled down for the night in the camp.

This left Jacob all alone in the camp, and a man came and wrestled with him until dawn.

When the man saw that he couldn't get the best of Jacob as they wrestled, he deliberately threw Jacob's hip out of joint.

When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.

Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob's hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him.

When the man saw that he couldn't win the match, he struck Jacob's hip and knocked it out of joint at the socket.

The man said, "Let me go; it's daybreak." Jacob said, "I'm not letting you go 'til you bless me."

Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak." But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."

Gen.32.26

And He said, "Let Me go, for the day breaks." But he said, "I will not let You go unless You bless me!"

Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is dawn." But Jacob panted, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."

Gen.32.27

The man said, "What's your name?" He answered, "Jacob."

Gen.32.27

The man asked him, "What is your name?Jacob," he answered.

Gen.32.27

So He said to him, "What is your name?" He said, "Jacob."

Gen.32.27

"What is your name?" the man asked. He replied, "Jacob."

Gen.32.28

The man said, "But no longer. Your name is no longer Jacob. From now on it's Israel (God-Wrestler); you've wrestled with God and you've come through."

Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome."

Gen.32.28

And He said, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed."

"Your name will no longer be Jacob," the man told him. "It is now Israel, because you have struggled with both God and men and have won."

Jacob asked, "And what's your name?" The man said, "Why do you want to know my name?" And then, right then and there, he blessed him.

Jacob said, "Please tell me your name." But he replied, "Why do you ask my name?" Then he blessed him there.

Then Jacob asked, saying, "Tell me Your name, I pray." And He said, "Why is it that you ask about My name?" And He blessed him there.

"What is your name?" Jacob asked him. "Why do you ask?" the man replied. Then he blessed Jacob there.

Gen.32.30

Jacob named the place Peniel (God's Face) because, he said, "I saw God face-to-face and lived to tell the story!"

So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared."

So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: "For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved."

Gen.32.30

Jacob named the place Peniel--"face of God"--for he said, "I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been spared."

The sun came up as he left Peniel, limping because of his hip.

Gen.32.31

The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip.

Gen.32.31

Just as he crossed over Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip.

The sun rose as he left Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip.

(This is why Israelites to this day don't eat the hip muscle; because Jacob's hip was thrown out of joint.)

Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob's hip was touched near the tendon.

Therefore to this day the children of Israel do not eat the muscle that shrank, which is on the hip socket, because He touched the socket of Jacob's hip in the muscle that shrank.

That is why even today the people of Israel don't eat meat from near the hip, in memory of what happened that night.

Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming with his four hundred men. He divided the children between Leah and Rachel and the two maidservants.

He led the way and, as he approached his brother, bowed seven times, honoring his brother.

Then he crossed over before them and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

Then Jacob went on ahead. As he approached his brother, he bowed low seven times before him.

But Esau ran up and embraced him, held him tight and kissed him. And they both wept.

And he lifted his eyes and saw the women and children, and said, "Who are these with you?" So he said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant."

Then Esau looked at the women and children and asked, "Who are these people with you?These are the children God has graciously given to me," Jacob replied.

Then the maidservants came up with their children and bowed;

Next Leah came with her children, and they bowed down. Finally, Rachel and Joseph came and made their bows.

Esau then asked, "And what was the meaning of all those herds that I met?I was hoping that they would pave the way for my master to welcome me."

Esau asked, "What do you mean by all these droves I met?To find favor in your eyes, my lord," he said.

Then Esau said, "What do you mean by all this company which I met?" And he said, "These are to find favor in the sight of my lord."

"And what were all the flocks and herds I met as I came?" Esau asked. Jacob replied, "They are gifts, my lord, to ensure your goodwill."

Esau said, "Oh, brother. I have plenty of everything--keep what is yours for yourself."

Gen.33.9

But Esau said, "I already have plenty, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself."

Gen.33.9

But Esau said, "I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself."

Gen.33.9

"Brother, I have plenty," Esau answered. "Keep what you have."

Gen.33.10

Jacob said, "Please. If you can find it in your heart to welcome me, accept these gifts. When I saw your face, it was as the face of God smiling on me.

Gen.33.10

"No, please!" said Jacob. "If I have found favor in your eyes, accept this gift from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me favorably.

And Jacob said, "No, please, if I have now found favor in your sight, then receive my present from my hand, inasmuch as I have seen your face as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me.

"No, please accept them," Jacob said, "for what a relief it is to see your friendly smile. It is like seeing the smile of God!

Gen.33.11

Accept the gifts I have brought for you. God has been good to me and I have more than enough." Jacob urged the gifts on him and Esau accepted.

Please accept the present that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and I have all I need." And because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted it.

Please, take my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough." So he urged him, and he took it.

Please take my gifts, for God has been very generous to me. I have more than enough." Jacob continued to insist, so Esau finally accepted them.

Gen.33.12

Then Esau said, "Let's start out on our way; I'll take the lead."

Then Esau said, "Let us be on our way; I'll accompany you."

Gen.33.12

Then Esau said, "Let us take our journey; let us go, and I will go before you."

Gen.33.12

"Well, let's be going," Esau said. "I will stay with you and lead the way."

Gen.33.13

But Jacob said, "My master can see that the children are frail. And the flocks and herds are nursing, making for slow going. If I push them too hard, even for a day, I'd lose them all.

Gen.33.13

But Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young. If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die.

Gen.33.13

But Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are weak, and the flocks and herds which are nursing are with me. And if the men should drive them hard one day, all the flock will die.

Gen.33.13

But Jacob replied, "You can see, my lord, that some of the children are very young, and the flocks and herds have their young, too. If they are driven too hard, they may die.

Gen.33.14

So, master, you go on ahead of your servant, while I take it easy at the pace of my flocks and children. I'll catch up with you in Seir."

So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the droves before me and that of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir."

Please let my lord go on ahead before his servant. I will lead on slowly at a pace which the livestock that go before me, and the children, are able to endure, until I come to my lord in Seir."

So go on ahead of us. We will follow at our own pace and meet you at Seir."

Esau said, "Let me at least lend you some of my men.There's no need," said Jacob. "Your generous welcome is all I need or want."

Esau said, "Then let me leave some of my men with you.But why do that?" Jacob asked. "Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord."

Gen.33.15

And Esau said, "Now let me leave with you some of the people who are with me." But he said, "What need is there? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord."

"Well," Esau said, "at least let me leave some of my men to guide and protect you.There is no reason for you to be so kind to me," Jacob insisted.

So Esau set out that day and made his way back to Seir.

And Jacob left for Succoth. He built a shelter for himself and sheds for his livestock. That's how the place came to be called Succoth (Sheds).

Meanwhile, Jacob and his household traveled on to Succoth. There he built himself a house and made shelters for his flocks and herds. That is why the place was named Succoth.

And that's how it happened that Jacob arrived all in one piece in Shechem in the land of Canaan--all the way from Paddan Aram. He camped near the city.

Then Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan Aram; and he pitched his tent before the city.

Then they arrived safely at Shechem, in Canaan, and they set up camp just outside the town.

He bought the land where he pitched his tent from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem. He paid a hundred silver coins for it.

And he bought the parcel of land, where he had pitched his tent, from the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for one hundred pieces of money.

Jacob bought the land he camped on from the family of Hamor, Shechem's father, for a hundred pieces of silver.

Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw.

How in the world do you think it's possible in broad daylight to enter the house of an awake, able-bodied man and walk off with his possessions unless you tie him up first? Tie him up, though, and you can clean him out.

"Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man's house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can rob his house.

Let me illustrate this. You can't enter a strong man's house and rob him without first tying him up. Only then can his house be robbed!

"This is war, and there is no neutral ground. If you're not on my side, you're the enemy; if you're not helping, you're making things worse.

That person ends up far worse off than if he'd never gotten cleaned up in the first place. "That's what this generation is like: You may think you have cleaned out the junk from your lives and gotten ready for God, but you weren't hospitable to my kingdom message, and now all the devils are moving back in."
