He noticed a well out in an open field with three flocks of sheep bedded down around it. This was the common well from which the flocks were watered. The stone over the mouth of the well was huge.

And he looked, and saw a well in the field; and behold, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks. A large stone was on the well's mouth.

He saw in the distance three flocks of sheep lying in an open field beside a well, waiting to be watered. But a heavy stone covered the mouth of the well.

When all the flocks were gathered, the shepherds would roll the stone from the well and water the sheep; then they would return the stone, covering the well.

It was the custom there to wait for all the flocks to arrive before removing the stone. After watering them, the stone would be rolled back over the mouth of the well.

Jacob said, "Hello friends. Where are you from?" They said, "We're from Haran."

Jacob asked the shepherds, "My brothers, where are you from?We're from Haran," they replied.

And Jacob said to them, "My brethren, where are you from?" And they said, "We are from Haran."

Jacob went over to the shepherds and asked them, "Where do you live?At Haran," they said.

Jacob asked, "Do you know Laban son of Nahor?We do."

He said to them, "Do you know Laban, Nahor's grandson?Yes, we know him," they answered.

Then he said to them, "Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?" And they said, "We know him."

Gen.29.5

"Do you know a man there named Laban, the grandson of Nahor?Yes, we do," they replied.

"Are things well with him?" Jacob continued. "Very well," they said. "And here is his daughter Rachel coming with the flock."

Then Jacob asked them, "Is he well?Yes, he is," they said, "and here comes his daughter Rachel with the sheep."

So he said to them, "Is he well?" And they said, "He is well. And look, his daughter Rachel is coming with the sheep."

"How is he?" Jacob asked. "He's well and prosperous. Look, here comes his daughter Rachel with the sheep."

Jacob said, "There's a lot of daylight still left; it isn't time to round up the sheep yet, is it? So why not water the flocks and go back to grazing?"

"Look," he said, "the sun is still high; it is not time for the flocks to be gathered. Water the sheep and take them back to pasture."

Then he said, "Look, it is still high day; it is not time for the cattle to be gathered together. Water the sheep, and go and feed them."

"Why don't you water the flocks so they can get back to grazing?" Jacob asked. "They'll be hungry if you stop so early in the day."

"We can't," they said. "Not until all the shepherds get here. It takes all of us to roll the stone from the well. Not until then can we water the flocks."

"We can't," they replied, "until all the flocks are gathered and the stone has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water the sheep."

But they said, "We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together, and they have rolled the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep."

"We don't roll away the stone and begin the watering until all the flocks and shepherds are here," they replied.

While Jacob was in conversation with them, Rachel came up with her father's sheep. She was the shepherd.

The moment Jacob spotted Rachel, daughter of Laban his mother's brother, saw her arriving with his uncle Laban's sheep, he went and single-handedly rolled the stone from the mouth of the well and watered the sheep of his uncle Laban.

When Jacob saw Rachel daughter of Laban, his mother's brother, and Laban's sheep, he went over and rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well and watered his uncle's sheep.

And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother.

And because she was his cousin, the daughter of his mother's brother, and because the sheep were his uncle's, Jacob went over to the well and rolled away the stone and watered his uncle's flock.

Then he kissed Rachel and broke into tears.

Then Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice and wept.

He told Rachel that he was related to her father, that he was Rebekah's son. She ran and told her father.

He explained that he was her cousin on her father's side, her aunt Rebekah's son. So Rachel quickly ran and told her father, Laban.

When Laban heard the news--Jacob, his sister's son!-he ran out to meet him, embraced and kissed him and brought him home. Jacob told Laban the story of everything that had happened.

Laban said, "You're family! My flesh and blood!" When Jacob had been with him for a month,

Laban said, "Just because you're my nephew, you shouldn't work for me for nothing. Tell me what you want to be paid. What's a fair wage?"

Laban said to him, "Just because you are a relative of mine, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me what your wages should be."

Then Laban said to Jacob, "Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what should your wages be?|"

Laban said to him, "You shouldn't work for me without pay just because we are relatives. How much do you want?"

Now Laban had two daughters; Leah was the older and Rachel the younger.

"It is far better," said Laban, "that I give her to you than marry her to some outsider. Yes. Stay here with me."

And Laban said, "It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to another man. Stay with me."

"Agreed!" Laban replied. "I'd rather give her to you than to someone outside the family."

So Jacob worked seven years for Rachel. But it only seemed like a few days, he loved her so much.

Finally, the time came for him to marry her. "I have fulfilled my contract," Jacob said to Laban. "Now give me my wife so we can be married."

Laban invited everyone around and threw a big feast.

So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a feast.

And Laban gathered together all the men of the place and made a feast.

So Laban invited everyone in the neighborhood to celebrate with Jacob at a wedding feast.

At evening, though, he got his daughter Leah and brought her to the marriage bed, and Jacob slept with her.

Now it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter and brought her to Jacob; and he went in to her.

That night, when it was dark, Laban took Leah to Jacob, and he slept with her.

Morning came: There was Leah in the marriage bed! Jacob confronted Laban, "What have you done to me? Didn't I work all this time for the hand of Rachel? Why did you cheat me?"

When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? I served you for Rachel, didn't I? Why have you deceived me?"

So it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you deceived me?"

But when Jacob woke up in the morning--it was Leah! "What sort of trick is this?" Jacob raged at Laban. "I worked seven years for Rachel. What do you mean by this trickery?"

"We don't do it that way in our country," said Laban. "We don't marry off the younger daughter before the older.

Laban replied, "It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one.

And Laban said, "It must not be done so in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.

"It's not our custom to marry off a younger daughter ahead of the firstborn," Laban replied.

Enjoy your week of honeymoon, and then we'll give you the other one also. But it will cost you another seven years of work."

Finish this daughter's bridal week; then we will give you the younger one also, in return for another seven years of work."

Fulfill her week, and we will give you this one also for the service which you will serve with me still another seven years."

"Wait until the bridal week is over, and you can have Rachel, too--that is, if you promise to work another seven years for me."

Jacob agreed. When he'd completed the honeymoon week, Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife.

And Jacob did so. He finished the week with Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife.

Then Jacob did so and fulfilled her week. So he gave him his daughter Rachel as wife also.

So Jacob agreed to work seven more years. A week after Jacob had married Leah, Laban gave him Rachel, too.

When GOD realized that Leah was unloved, he opened her womb. But Rachel was barren.

Leah became pregnant and had a son. She named him Reuben (Look-It's-a-Boy!). "This is a sign," she said, "that GOD has seen my misery; and a sign that now my husband will love me."

Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said, "It is because the LORD has seen my misery. Surely my husband will love me now."

So Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben; for she said, "The LORD has surely looked on my affliction. Now therefore, my husband will love me."

So Leah became pregnant and had a son. She named him Reuben, for she said, "The LORD has noticed my misery, and now my husband will love me."

She became pregnant again and had another son. "GOD heard," she said, "that I was unloved and so he gave me this son also." She named this one Simeon (GOD-Heard).

She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, "Because the LORD heard that I am not loved, he gave me this one too." So she named him Simeon.

Then she conceived again and bore a son, and said, "Because the LORD has heard that I am unloved, He has therefore given me this son also." And she called his name Simeon.

She soon became pregnant again and had another son. She named him Simeon, for she said, "The LORD heard that I was unloved and has given me another son."

She became pregnant yet again--another son. She said, "Now maybe my husband will connect with me--I've given him three sons!" That's why she named him Levi (Connect).

Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, "Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons." So he was named Levi.

She conceived again and bore a son, and said, "Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons." Therefore his name was called Levi.

Again she became pregnant and had a son. She named him Levi, for she said, "Surely now my husband will feel affection for me, since I have given him three sons!"

She became pregnant a final time and had a fourth son. She said, "This time I'll praise GOD." So she named him Judah (Praise-GOD). Then she stopped having children. [JC]

She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, "This time I will praise the LORD." So she named him Judah. Then she stopped having children.

And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, "Now I will praise the LORD." Therefore she called his name Judah. Then she stopped bearing.

Once again she became pregnant and had a son. She named him Judah, for she said, "Now I will praise the LORD!" And then she stopped having children.

When Rachel realized that she wasn't having any children for Jacob, she became jealous of her sister. She told Jacob, "Give me sons or I'll die!"

When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, "Give me children, or I'll die!"

Now when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister, and said to Jacob, "Give me children, or else I die!"

When Rachel saw that she wasn't having any children, she became jealous of her sister. "Give me children, or I'll die!" she exclaimed to Jacob.

Jacob got angry with Rachel and said, "Am I God? Am I the one who refused you babies?"

Jacob became angry with her and said, "Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?"

And Jacob's anger was aroused against Rachel, and he said, "Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?"

Jacob flew into a rage. "Am I God?" he asked. "He is the only one able to give you children!"

Rachel said, "Here's my maid Bilhah. Sleep with her. Let her substitute for me so I can have a child through her and build a family."

Then she said, "Here is Bilhah, my maidservant. Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and that through her I too can build a family."

So she said, "Here is my maid Bilhah; go in to her, and she will bear a child on my knees, that I also may have children by her."

Then Rachel told him, "Sleep with my servant, Bilhah, and she will bear children for me."

So she gave him her maid Bilhah for a wife and Jacob slept with her.

Then she gave him Bilhah her maid as wife, and Jacob went in to her.

Rachel said, "God took my side and vindicated me. He listened to me and gave me a son." She named him Dan (Vindication).

Then Rachel said, "God has vindicated me; he has listened to my plea and given me a son." Because of this she named him Dan.

Then Rachel said, "God has judged my case; and He has also heard my voice and given me a son." Therefore she called his name Dan.

Rachel named him Dan, for she said, "God has vindicated me! He has heard my request and given me a son."

Rachel's maid Bilhah became pregnant again and gave Jacob a second son.

Then Bilhah became pregnant again and gave Jacob a second son.

Rachel said, "I've been in an all-out fight with my sister--and I've won." So she named him Naphtali (Fight).

Then Rachel said, "I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won." So she named him Naphtali.

Then Rachel said, "With great wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister, and indeed I have prevailed." So she called his name Naphtali.

Rachel named him Naphtali, for she said, "I have had an intense struggle with my sister, and I am winning!"

When Leah saw that she wasn't having any more children, she gave her maid Zilpah to Jacob for a wife.

When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her maidservant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife.

When Leah saw that she had stopped bearing, she took Zilpah her maid and gave her to Jacob as wife.

Meanwhile, Leah realized that she wasn't getting pregnant anymore, so she gave her servant, Zilpah, to Jacob to be his wife.

Zilpah had a son for Jacob.

Leah's servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.

And Leah's maid Zilpah bore Jacob a son.

Soon Zilpah presented him with another son.

Leah said, "How fortunate!" and she named him Gad (Lucky).

Then Leah said, "What good fortune!" So she named him Gad.

Then Leah said, "A troop comes!" So she called his name Gad.

Gen.30.11

Leah named him Gad, for she said, "How fortunate I am!"

When Leah's maid Zilpah had a second son for Jacob,

Leah's servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.

And Leah's maid Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.

Then Zilpah produced a second son,

Leah said, "A happy day! The women will congratulate me in my happiness." So she named him Asher (Happy).

Then Leah said, "How happy I am! The women will call me happy." So she named him Asher.

Gen.30.13

Then Leah said, "I am happy, for the daughters will call me blessed." So she called his name Asher.

Gen.30.13

and Leah named him Asher, for she said, "What joy is mine! The other women will consider me happy indeed!"

One day during the wheat harvest Reuben found some mandrakes in the field and brought them home to his mother Leah. Rachel asked Leah, "Could I please have some of your son's mandrakes?"

During wheat harvest, Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants, which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, "Please give me some of your son's mandrakes."

Now Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, "Please give me some of your son's mandrakes."

One day during the wheat harvest, Reuben found some mandrakes growing in a field and brought the roots to his mother, Leah. Rachel begged Leah to give some of them to her.

Leah said, "Wasn't it enough that you got my husband away from me? And now you also want my son's mandrakes?" Rachel said, "All right. I'll let him sleep with you tonight in exchange for your son's love-apples."

But she said to her, "Wasn't it enough that you took away my husband? Will you take my son's mandrakes too?Very well," Rachel said, "he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son's mandrakes."

But she said to her, "Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son's mandrakes also?" And Rachel said, "Therefore he will lie with you tonight for your son's mandrakes."

But Leah angrily replied, "Wasn't it enough that you stole my husband? Now will you steal my son's mandrake roots, too?" Rachel said, "I will let him sleep with you tonight in exchange for the mandrake roots."

When Jacob came home that evening from the fields, Leah was there to meet him: "Sleep with me tonight; I've bartered my son's mandrakes for a night with you." So he slept with her that night.

So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. "You must sleep with me," she said. "I have hired you with my son's mandrakes." So he slept with her that night.

When Jacob came out of the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, "You must come in to me, for I have surely hired you with my son's mandrakes." And he lay with her that night.

So that evening, as Jacob was coming home from the fields, Leah went out to meet him. "You must sleep with me tonight!" she said. "I have paid for you with some mandrake roots my son has found." So Jacob slept with her.

God listened to Leah; she became pregnant and gave Jacob a fifth son.

And God answered her prayers. She became pregnant again and gave birth to her fifth son.

She said, "God rewarded me for giving my maid to my husband." She named him Issachar (Bartered).

"So, what should I pay you?" Jacob said, "You don't have to pay me a thing. But how about this? I will go back to pasture and care for your flocks.

"What shall I give you?" he asked. "Don't give me anything," Jacob replied. "But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them:
