When Isaac had become an old man and was nearly blind, he called his eldest son, Esau, and said, "My son.Yes, Father?"

When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called for Esau his older son and said to him, "My son.Here I am," he answered.

Now it came to pass, when Isaac was old and his eyes were so dim that he could not see, that he called Esau his older son and said to him, "My son." And he answered him, "Here I am."

When Isaac was old and almost blind, he called for Esau, his older son, and said, "My son?Yes, Father?" Esau replied.

"I'm an old man," he said; "I might die any day now.

Gen.27.2

Isaac said, "I am now an old man and don't know the day of my death.

Then he said, "Behold now, I am old. I do not know the day of my death.

"I am an old man now," Isaac said, "and I expect every day to be my last.

Do me a favor: Get your quiver of arrows and your bow and go out in the country and hunt me some game.

Now then, get your weapons-your quiver and bow-and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.

Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me.

Take your bow and a quiver full of arrows out into the open country, and hunt some wild game for me.

Then fix me a hearty meal, the kind that you know I like, and bring it to me to eat so that I can give you my personal blessing before I die."

Rebekah was eavesdropping as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. As soon as Esau had gone off to the country to hunt game for his father,

Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left for the open country to hunt game and bring it back,

But Rebekah overheard the conversation. So when Esau left to hunt for the wild game,

Rebekah spoke to her son Jacob. "I just overheard your father talking with your brother, Esau. He said,

Rebekah said to her son Jacob, "Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau,

So Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, "Indeed I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying,

she said to her son Jacob, "I overheard your father asking Esau

"Bring me some game and fix me a hearty meal so that I can eat and bless you with GOD's blessing before I die.'

'Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the LORD before I die.'

"Bring me game and make savory food for me, that I may eat it and bless you in the presence of the LORD before my death.'

to prepare him a delicious meal of wild game. He wants to bless Esau in the LORD's presence before he dies.

"Now, my son, listen to me. Do what I tell you.

Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you:

Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to what I command you.

Now, my son, do exactly as I tell you.

Gen.27.9

Go to the flock and get me two young goats. Pick the best; I'll prepare them into a hearty meal, the kind that your father loves.

Gen.27.9

Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it.

Go now to the flock and bring me from there two choice kids of the goats, and I will make savory food from them for your father, such as he loves.

And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, "Look, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth-skinned man.

"But Mother!" Jacob replied. "He won't be fooled that easily. Think how hairy Esau is and how smooth my skin is!

What happens if my father touches me? He'll think I'm playing games with him. I'll bring down a curse on myself instead of a blessing."

What if my father touches me? I would appear to be tricking him and would bring down a curse on myself rather than a blessing."

Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to be a deceiver to him; and I shall bring a curse on myself and not a blessing."

"If it comes to that," said his mother, "I'll take the curse on myself. Now, just do what I say. Go and get the goats."

But his mother said to him, "Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, get them for me."

So he went and got them and brought them to his mother and she cooked a hearty meal, the kind his father loved so much.

Then Rebekah took the best clothes of Esau her older son, which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob.

Then Rebekah took the choice clothes of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son.

Then she took Esau's best clothes, which were there in the house, and dressed Jacob with them.

She took the goatskins and covered his hands and the smooth nape of his neck.

She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins.

And she put the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.

She made him a pair of gloves from the hairy skin of the young goats, and she fastened a strip of the goat's skin around his neck.

Then she placed the hearty meal she had fixed and fresh bread she'd baked into the hands of her son Jacob.

Then she gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.

Then she gave him the meat dish, with its rich aroma, and some freshly baked bread.

He went to his father and said, "My father!Yes?" he said. "Which son are you?"

He went to his father and said, "My father.Yes, my son," he answered. "Who is it?"

So he went to his father and said, "My father." And he said, "Here I am. Who are you, my son?"

Jacob carried the platter of food to his father and said, "My father?Yes, my son," he answered. "Who is it--Esau or Jacob?"

Jacob answered his father, "I'm your firstborn son Esau. I did what you told me. Come now; sit up and eat of my game so you can give me your personal blessing."

Jacob said to his father, "I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game so that you may give me your blessing."

Isaac said, "So soon? How did you get it so quickly?Because your GOD cleared the way for me."

Isaac asked his son, "How did you find it so quickly, my son?The LORD your God gave me success," he replied.

But Isaac said to his son, "How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?" And he said, "Because the LORD your God brought it to me."

Isaac asked, "How were you able to find it so quickly, my son?Because the LORD your God put it in my path!" Jacob replied.

Gen.27.21

Isaac said, "Come close, son; let me touch you--are you really my son Esau?"

Gen.27.21

Then Isaac said to Jacob, "Come near so I can touch you, my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not."

Gen.27.21

Isaac said to Jacob, "Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not."

Gen.27.21

Then Isaac said to Jacob, "Come over here. I want to touch you to make sure you really are Esau."

So Jacob moved close to his father Isaac. Isaac felt him and said, "The voice is Jacob's voice but the hands are the hands of Esau."

Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, "The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau."

So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, "The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau."

So Jacob went over to his father, and Isaac touched him. "The voice is Jacob's, but the hands are Esau's," Isaac said to himself.

He didn't recognize him because his hands were hairy, like his brother Esau's. But as he was about to bless him

He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he blessed him.

And he did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau's hands; so he blessed him.

But he did not recognize Jacob because Jacob's hands felt hairy just like Esau's. So Isaac pronounced his blessing on Jacob.

he pressed him, "You're sure? You are my son Esau?Yes. I am."

"Are you really my son Esau?" he asked. "I am," he replied.

Then he said, "Are you really my son Esau?" He said, "I am."

"Are you really my son Esau?" he asked. "Yes, of course," Jacob replied.

Isaac said, "Bring the food so I can eat of my son's game and give you my personal blessing." Jacob brought it to him and he ate. He also brought him wine and he drank.

Then he said, "My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing." Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank.

He said, "Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son's game, so that my soul may bless you." So he brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank.

Then Isaac said, "Now, my son, bring me the meat. I will eat it, and then I will give you my blessing." So Jacob took the food over to his father, and Isaac ate it. He also drank the wine that Jacob served him. Then Isaac said,

Then Isaac said, "Come close, son, and kiss me."

Then his father Isaac said to him, "Come here, my son, and kiss me."

Then his father Isaac said to him, "Come near now and kiss me, my son."

"Come here and kiss me, my son."

He came close and kissed him and Isaac smelled the smell of his clothes. Finally, he blessed him, Ahhh. The smell of my son is like the smell of the open country blessed by GOD.

Gen.27.27

So he went to him and kissed him. When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he blessed him and said, "Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the LORD has blessed.

And he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him and said: "Surely, the smell of my son Is like the smell of a field Which the LORD has blessed.

So Jacob went over and kissed him. And when Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he was finally convinced, and he blessed his son. He said, "The smell of my son is the good smell of the open fields that the LORD has blessed.

May God give you of Heaven's dew and Earth's bounty of grain and wine.

May God give you of heaven's dew and of earth's richness- an abundance of grain and new wine.

Therefore may God give you Of the dew of heaven, Of the fatness of the earth, And plenty of grain and wine.

May peoples serve you and nations honor you. You will master your brothers, and your mother's sons will honor you. Those who curse you will be cursed, those who bless you will be blessed.

May nations serve you and peoples bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed."

Gen.27.29

Let peoples serve you, And nations bow down to you. Be master over your brethren, And let your mother's sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, And blessed be those who bless you!"

Gen.27.29

May many nations become your servants. May you be the master of your brothers. May all your mother's sons bow low before you. All who curse you are cursed, and all who bless you are blessed."

And then right after Isaac had blessed Jacob and Jacob had left, Esau showed up from the hunt.

After Isaac finished blessing him and Jacob had scarcely left his father's presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting.

Now it happened, as soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.

As soon as Isaac had blessed Jacob, and almost before Jacob had left his father, Esau returned from his hunting trip.

He also had prepared a hearty meal. He came to his father and said, "Let my father get up and eat of his son's game, that he may give me his personal blessing."

He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, "My father, sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing."

He also had made savory food, and brought it to his father, and said to his father, "Let my father arise and eat of his son's game, that your soul may bless me."

Esau prepared his father's favorite meat dish and brought it to him. Then he said, "I'm back, Father, and I have the wild game. Sit up and eat it so you can give me your blessing."

His father Isaac said, "And who are you?I am your son, your firstborn, Esau."

His father Isaac asked him, "Who are you?I am your son," he answered, "your firstborn, Esau."

And his father Isaac said to him, "Who are you?" So he said, "I am your son, your firstborn, Esau."

But Isaac asked him, "Who are you?Why, it's me, of course!" he replied. "It's Esau, your older son."

Isaac started to tremble, shaking violently. He said, "Then who hunted game and brought it to me? I finished the meal just now, before you walked in. And I blessed him--he's blessed for good!"

Isaac trembled violently and said, "Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me? I ate it just before you came and I blessed him-and indeed he will be blessed!"

Then Isaac trembled exceedingly, and said, "Who? Where is the one who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate all of it before you came, and I have blessed him--and indeed he shall be blessed."

Isaac began to tremble uncontrollably and said, "Then who was it that just served me wild game? I have already eaten it, and I blessed him with an irrevocable blessing before you came."

Esau, hearing his father's words, sobbed violently and most bitterly, and cried to his father, "My father! Can't you also bless me?"

Gen.27.34

When Esau heard his father's words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, "Bless me-me too, my father!"

When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, "Bless me--me also, O my father!"

Gen.27.34

When Esau understood, he let out a loud and bitter cry. "O my father, bless me, too!" he begged.

Gen.27.35

"Your brother," he said, "came here falsely and took your blessing."

Gen.27.35

But he said, "Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing."

Gen.27.35

But he said, "Your brother came with deceit and has taken away your blessing."

Gen.27.35

But Isaac said, "Your brother was here, and he tricked me. He has carried away your blessing."

Gen.27.36

Esau said, "Not for nothing was he named Jacob, the Heel. Twice now he's tricked me: first he took my birthright and now he's taken my blessing." He begged, "Haven't you kept back any blessing for me?"

Esau said, "Isn't he rightly named Jacob? He has deceived me these two times: He took my birthright, and now he's taken my blessing!" Then he asked, "Haven't you reserved any blessing for me?"

Gen.27.36

And Esau said, "Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright, and now look, he has taken away my blessing!" And he said, "Have you not reserved a blessing for me?"

Gen.27.36

Esau said bitterly, "No wonder his name is Jacob, for he has deceived me twice, first taking my birthright and now stealing my blessing. Oh, haven't you saved even one blessing for me?"

Gen.27.37

Isaac answered Esau, "I've made him your master, and all his brothers his servants, and lavished grain and wine on him. I've given it all away. What's left for you, my son?"

Gen.27.37

Isaac answered Esau, "I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine. So what can I possibly do for you, my son?"

Gen.27.37

Then Isaac answered and said to Esau, "Indeed I have made him your master, and all his brethren I have given to him as servants; with grain and wine I have sustained him. What shall I do now for you, my son?"

Gen.27.37

Isaac said to Esau, "I have made Jacob your master and have declared that all his brothers will be his servants. I have guaranteed him an abundance of grain and wine--what is there left to give?"

Gen.27.38

"But don't you have just one blessing for me, Father? Oh, bless me my father! Bless me!" Esau sobbed inconsolably.

Gen.27.38

Esau said to his father, "Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!" Then Esau wept aloud.

Gen.27.38

And Esau said to his father, "Have you only one blessing, my father? Bless me--me also, O my father!" And Esau lifted up his voice and wept.

Esau pleaded, "Not one blessing left for me? O my father, bless me, too!" Then Esau broke down and wept.

Isaac said to him, You'll live far from Earth's bounty, remote from Heaven's dew.

Gen.27.39

His father Isaac answered him, "Your dwelling will be away from the earth's richness, away from the dew of heaven above.

Gen.27.39

Then Isaac his father answered and said to him: "Behold, your dwelling shall be of the fatness of the earth, And of the dew of heaven from above.

His father, Isaac, said to him, "You will live off the land and what it yields,

Gen.27.40

You'll live by your sword, hand-to-mouth, and you'll serve your brother. But when you can't take it any more you'll break loose and run free.

Gen.27.40

You will live by the sword and you will serve your brother. But when you grow restless, you will throw his yoke from off your neck."

Gen.27.40

By your sword you shall live, And you shall serve your brother; And it shall come to pass, when you become restless, That you shall break his yoke from your neck."

and you will live by your sword. You will serve your brother for a time, but then you will shake loose from him and be free."

Gen.27.41

Esau seethed in anger against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him; he brooded, "The time for mourning my father's death is close. And then I'll kill my brother Jacob."

Gen.27.41

Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, "The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob."

Gen.27.41

So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, "The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob."

Gen.27.41

Esau hated Jacob because he had stolen his blessing, and he said to himself, "My father will soon be dead and gone. Then I will kill Jacob."

Gen.27.42

When these words of her older son Esau were reported to Rebekah, she called her younger son Jacob and said, "Your brother Esau is plotting vengeance against you. He's going to kill you.

When Rebekah was told what her older son Esau had said, she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him, "Your brother Esau is consoling himself with the thought of killing you.

And the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, "Surely your brother Esau comforts himself concerning you by intending to kill you.

But someone got wind of what Esau was planning and reported it to Rebekah. She sent for Jacob and told him, "Esau is threatening to kill you.

Gen.27.43

Son, listen to me. Get out of here. Run for your life to Haran, to my brother Laban.

Gen.27.43

Now then, my son, do what I say: Flee at once to my brother Laban in Haran.

Gen.27.43

Now therefore, my son, obey my voice: arise, flee to my brother Laban in Haran.

Gen.27.43

This is what you should do. Flee to your uncle Laban in Haran.

Gen.27.44

Live with him for a while until your brother cools down,

Gen.27.44

Stay with him for a while until your brother's fury subsides.

Gen.27.44

And stay with him a few days, until your brother's fury turns away,

Stay there with him until your brother's fury is spent.

Gen.27.45

until his anger subsides and he forgets what you did to him. I'll then send for you and bring you back. Why should I lose both of you the same day?"

When your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to him, I'll send word for you to come back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?"

until your brother's anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereaved also of you both in one day?"

When he forgets what you have done, I will send for you. Why should I lose both of you in one day?"

Gen.27.46

Rebekah spoke to Isaac, "I'm sick to death of these Hittite women. If Jacob also marries a native Hittite woman, why live?"

Gen.27.46

Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I'm disgusted with living because of these Hittite women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land, from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living."

Gen.27.46

And Rebekah said to Isaac, "I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth; if Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, like these who are the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?"

Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I'm sick and tired of these local Hittite women. I'd rather die than see Jacob marry one of them."

Gen.28.1

So Isaac called in Jacob and blessed him. Then he ordered him, "Don't take a Caananite wife.

So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him and commanded him: "Do not marry a Canaanite woman.

Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him, and charged him, and said to him: "You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.

So Isaac called for Jacob, blessed him, and said, "Do not marry any of these Canaanite women.

Leave at once. Go to Paddan Aram to the family of your mother's father, Bethuel. Get a wife for yourself from the daughters of your uncle Laban.

Go at once to Paddan Aram, to the house of your mother's father Bethuel. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.

Arise, go to Padan Aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother's father; and take yourself a wife from there of the daughters of Laban your mother's brother.

Instead, go at once to Paddan-aram, to the house of your grandfather Bethuel, and marry one of your uncle Laban's daughters.

"And may The Strong God bless you and give you many, many children, a congregation of peoples;

May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples.

and pass on the blessing of Abraham to you and your descendants so that you will get this land in which you live, this land God gave Abraham."

So Isaac sent Jacob off. He went to Paddan Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.

he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son. This was in addition to the wives he already had. [JC]

Then GOD was right before him, saying, "I am GOD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. I'm giving the ground on which you are sleeping to you and to your descendants.

Your descendants will be as the dust of the Earth; they'll stretch from west to east and from north to south. All the families of the Earth will bless themselves in you and your descendants.

Jacob was up first thing in the morning. He took the stone he had used for his pillow and stood it up as a memorial pillar and poured oil over it.

He christened the place Bethel (God's House). The name of the town had been Luz until then.

He named the place Bethel--"house of God"--though the name of the nearby village was Luz.

Jacob vowed a vow: "If God stands by me and protects me on this journey on which I'm setting out, keeps me in food and clothing,
