Abraham was now an old man. GOD had blessed Abraham in every way.

So Abraham said to the oldest servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had, "Please, put your hand under my thigh,

One day Abraham said to the man in charge of his household, who was his oldest servant,

and swear by GOD-God of Heaven, God of Earth--that you will not get a wife for my son from among the young women of the Canaanites here,

Gen.24.3

I want you to swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living,

Gen.24.3

and I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;

"Swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not let my son marry one of these local Canaanite women.

Gen.24.4

but will go to the land of my birth and get a wife for my son Isaac."

but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac."

but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac."

Go instead to my homeland, to my relatives, and find a wife there for my son Isaac."

The servant answered, "But what if the woman refuses to leave home and come with me? Do I then take your son back to your home country?"

The servant asked him, "What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?"

Gen.24.5

And the servant said to him, "Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I take your son back to the land from which you came?"

Gen.24.5

The servant asked, "But suppose I can't find a young woman who will travel so far from home? May I then take Isaac there to live among your relatives?"

Gen.24.6

Abraham said, "Oh no. Never. By no means are you to take my son back there.

Gen.24.6

"Make sure that you do not take my son back there," Abraham said.

But Abraham said to him, "Beware that you do not take my son back there.

Gen.24.6

"No!" Abraham warned. "Be careful never to take my son there.

Gen.24.7

GOD, the God of Heaven, took me from the home of my father and from the country of my birth and spoke to me in solemn promise, "I'm giving this land to your descendants.' This God will send his angel ahead of you to get a wife for my son.

"The LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father's household and my native land and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, 'To your offspring I will give this land'-he will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there.

The LORD God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, "To your descendants I give this land,' He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.

For the LORD, the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and my native land, solemnly promised to give this land to my offspring. He will send his angel ahead of you, and he will see to it that you find a young woman there to be my son's wife.

And if the woman won't come, you are free from this oath you've sworn to me. But under no circumstances are you to take my son back there."

So the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and gave his solemn oath.

Then the servant took ten of his master's camels and left, taking with him all kinds of good things from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim and made his way to the town of Nahor.

Then the servant took ten of his master's camels and departed, for all his master's goods were in his hand. And he arose and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor.

He loaded ten of Abraham's camels with gifts and set out, taking with him the best of everything his master owned. He traveled to Aram-naharaim and went to the village where Abraham's brother Nahor had settled.

Outside the city, he made the camels kneel at a well. It was evening, the time when the women came to draw water.

He had the camels kneel down near the well outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water.

And he made his camels kneel down outside the city by a well of water at evening time, the time when women go out to draw water.

There the servant made the camels kneel down beside a well just outside the village. It was evening, and the women were coming out to draw water.

He prayed, "O GOD, God of my master Abraham, make things go smoothly this day; treat my master Abraham well!

Then he prayed, "O LORD, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.

Gen.24.12

Then he said, "O LORD God of my master Abraham, please give me success this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham.

Gen.24.12

"O LORD, God of my master," he prayed. "Give me success and show kindness to my master, Abraham. Help me to accomplish the purpose of my journey.

Gen.24.13

As I stand here by the spring while the young women of the town come out to get water,

Gen.24.13

See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.

Behold, here I stand by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water.

See, here I am, standing beside this spring, and the young women of the village are coming out to draw water.

let the girl to whom I say, "Lower your jug and give me a drink,' and who answers, "Drink, and let me also water your camels'-let her be the woman you have picked out for your servant Isaac. Then I'll know that you're working graciously behind the scenes for my master."

May it be that when I say to a girl, 'Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,' and she says, 'Drink, and I'll water your camels too'-let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master."

Now let it be that the young woman to whom I say, "Please let down your pitcher that I may drink,' and she says, "Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink'--let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. And by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master."

This is my request. I will ask one of them for a drink. If she says, `Yes, certainly, and I will water your camels, too!'--let her be the one you have appointed as Isaac's wife. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master."

It so happened that the words were barely out of his mouth when Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel whose mother was Milcah the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came out with a water jug on her shoulder.

Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, who was the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor.

And it happened, before he had finished speaking, that behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came out with her pitcher on her shoulder.

As he was still praying, a young woman named Rebekah arrived with a water jug on her shoulder. Her father was Bethuel, who was the son of Abraham's brother Nahor and his wife, Milcah.

The girl was stunningly beautiful, a pure virgin. She went down to the spring, filled her jug, and came back up.

The servant ran to meet her and said, "Please, can I have a sip of water from your jug?"

The servant hurried to meet her and said, "Please give me a little water from your jar."

Gen.24.17

And the servant ran to meet her and said, "Please let me drink a little water from your pitcher."

Running over to her, the servant asked, "Please give me a drink."

Gen.24.18

She said, "Certainly, drink!" And she held the jug so that he could drink.

Gen.24.18

"Drink, my lord," she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink.

Gen.24.18

So she said, "Drink, my lord." Then she quickly let her pitcher down to her hand, and gave him a drink.

"Certainly, sir," she said, and she quickly lowered the jug for him to drink.

When he had satisfied his thirst she said, "I'll get water for your camels, too, until they've drunk their fill."

After she had given him a drink, she said, "I'll draw water for your camels too, until they have finished drinking."

And when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, "I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking."

When he had finished, she said, "I'll draw water for your camels, too, until they have had enough!"

She promptly emptied her jug into the trough and ran back to the well to fill it, and she kept at it until she had watered all the camels.

So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels.

Then she quickly emptied her pitcher into the trough, ran back to the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.

So she quickly emptied the jug into the watering trough and ran down to the well again. She kept carrying water to the camels until they had finished drinking.

The man watched, silent. Was this GOD's answer? Had GOD made his trip a success or not?

Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the LORD had made his journey successful.

And the man, wondering at her, remained silent so as to know whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not.

The servant watched her in silence, wondering whether or not she was the one the LORD intended him to meet.

When the camels had finished drinking, the man brought out gifts, a gold nose ring weighing a little over a quarter of an ounce and two arm bracelets weighing about four ounces, and gave them to her.

When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring weighing a beka and two gold bracelets weighing ten shekels.

So it was, when the camels had finished drinking, that the man took a golden nose ring weighing half a shekel, and two bracelets for her wrists weighing ten shekels of gold,

Then at last, when the camels had finished drinking, he gave her a gold ring for her nose and two large gold bracelets for her wrists.

He asked her, "Tell me about your family? Whose daughter are you? Is there room in your father's house for us to stay the night?"

Then he asked, "Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room in your father's house for us to spend the night?"

Gen.24.23

and said, "Whose daughter are you? Tell me, please, is there room in your father's house for us to lodge?"

Gen.24.23

"Whose daughter are you?" he asked. "Would your father have any room to put us up for the night?"

Gen.24.24

She said, "I'm the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah and Nahor.

Gen.24.24

She answered him, "I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milcah bore to Nahor."

Gen.24.24

So she said to him, "I am the daughter of Bethuel, Milcah's son, whom she bore to Nahor."

Gen.24.24

"My father is Bethuel," she replied. "My grandparents are Nahor and Milcah.

Gen.24.25

And there's plenty of room in our house for you to stay--and lots of straw and feed besides."

Gen.24.25

And she added, "We have plenty of straw and fodder, as well as room for you to spend the night."

Gen.24.25

Moreover she said to him, "We have both straw and feed enough, and room to lodge."

Gen.24.25

Yes, we have plenty of straw and food for the camels, and we have a room for guests."

Gen.24.26

At this the man bowed in worship before GOD

Gen.24.26

Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD,

Gen.24.26

Then the man bowed down his head and worshiped the LORD.

Gen.24.26

The man fell down to the ground and worshiped the LORD.

Gen.24.27

and prayed, "Blessed be GOD, God of my master Abraham: How generous and true you've been to my master; you've held nothing back. You led me right to the door of my master's brother!"

saying, "Praise be to the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master's relatives."

And he said, "Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken His mercy and His truth toward my master. As for me, being on the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master's brethren."

"Praise be to the LORD, the God of my master, Abraham," he said. "The LORD has been so kind and faithful to Abraham, for he has led me straight to my master's relatives."

And the girl was off and running, telling everyone in her mother's house what had happened.

The girl ran and told her mother's household about these things.

So the young woman ran and told her mother's household these things.

The young woman ran home to tell her family about all that had happened.

Rebekah had a brother named Laban. Laban ran outside to the man at the spring.

Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he hurried out to the man at the spring.

Now Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban, and Laban ran out to the man by the well.

Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban.

He had seen the nose ring and the bracelets on his sister and had heard her say, "The man said this and this and this to me." So he went to the man and there he was, still standing with his camels at the spring.

As soon as he had seen the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister's arms, and had heard Rebekah tell what the man said to her, he went out to the man and found him standing by the camels near the spring.

So it came to pass, when he saw the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister's wrists, and when he heard the words of his sister Rebekah, saying, "Thus the man spoke to me," that he went to the man. And there he stood by the camels at the well.

When he saw the nose-ring and the bracelets on his sister's wrists, and when he heard her story, he rushed out to the spring, where the man was still standing beside his camels. Laban said to him,

Laban welcomed him: "Come on in, blessed of GOD! Why are you standing out here? I've got the house ready for you; and there's also a place for your camels."

"Come, you who are blessed by the LORD," he said. "Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels."

Gen.24.31

And he said, "Come in, O blessed of the LORD! Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels."

"Come and stay with us, you who are blessed by the LORD. Why do you stand here outside the village when we have a room all ready for you and a place prepared for the camels!"

Gen.24.32

So the man went into the house. The camels were unloaded and given straw and feed. Water was brought to bathe the feet of the man and the men with him.

So the man went to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and fodder were brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet.

Then the man came to the house. And he unloaded the camels, and provided straw and feed for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.

So the man went home with Laban, and Laban unloaded the camels, gave him straw to bed them down, fed them, and provided water for the camel drivers to wash their feet.

Then Laban brought out food. But the man said, "I won't eat until I tell my story." Laban said, "Go ahead; tell us."

Then food was set before him, but he said, "I will not eat until I have told you what I have to say.Then tell us," Laban said.

Gen.24.33

Food was set before him to eat, but he said, "I will not eat until I have told about my errand." And he said, "Speak on."

Then supper was served. But Abraham's servant said, "I don't want to eat until I have told you why I have come.All right," Laban said, "tell us your mission."

The servant said, "I'm the servant of Abraham.

So he said, "I am Abraham's servant.

So he said, "I am Abraham's servant.

Gen.24.34

"I am Abraham's servant," he explained.

Gen.24.35

GOD has blessed my master--he's a great man; GOD has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, servants and maidservants, camels and donkeys.

The LORD has blessed my master abundantly, and he has become wealthy. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, menservants and maidservants, and camels and donkeys.

The LORD has blessed my master greatly, and he has become great; and He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys.

"And the LORD has blessed my master richly; he has become a great man. The LORD has given him flocks of sheep and herds of cattle, a fortune in silver and gold, and many servants and camels and donkeys.

And then to top it off, Sarah, my master's wife, gave him a son in her old age and he has passed everything on to his son.

My master's wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age, and he has given him everything he owns.

And Sarah my master's wife bore a son to my master when she was old; and to him he has given all that he has.

When Sarah, my master's wife, was very old, she gave birth to my master's son, and my master has given him everything he owns.

My master made me promise, "Don't get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose land I live.

And my master made me swear an oath, and said, 'You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live,

Now my master made me swear, saying, "You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell;

And my master made me swear that I would not let Isaac marry one of the local Canaanite women.

No, go to my father's home, back to my family, and get a wife for my son there.'

Gen.24.38

but go to my father's family and to my own clan, and get a wife for my son.'

but you shall go to my father's house and to my family, and take a wife for my son.'

Instead, I was to come to his relatives here in this far-off land, to his father's home. I was told to bring back a young woman from here to marry his son.

I said to my master, "But what if the woman won't come with me?'

"Then I asked my master, 'What if the woman will not come back with me?'

Gen.24.39

And I said to my master, "Perhaps the woman will not follow me.'

Gen.24.39

" `But suppose I can't find a young woman willing to come back with me?' I asked him.

He said, "GOD before whom I've walked faithfully will send his angel with you and he'll make things work out so that you'll bring back a wife for my son from my family, from the house of my father.

Gen.24.40

"He replied, 'The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you and make your journey a success, so that you can get a wife for my son from my own clan and from my father's family.

Gen.24.40

But he said to me, "The LORD, before whom I walk, will send His angel with you and prosper your way; and you shall take a wife for my son from my family and from my father's house.

Gen.24.40

`You will,' he told me, `for the LORD, in whose presence I have walked, will send his angel with you and will make your mission successful. Yes, you must get a wife for my son from among my relatives, from my father's family.

Gen.24.41

Then you'll be free from the oath. If you go to my family and they won't give her to you, you will also be free from the oath.'

Then, when you go to my clan, you will be released from my oath even if they refuse to give her to you-you will be released from my oath.'

You will be clear from this oath when you arrive among my family; for if they will not give her to you, then you will be released from my oath.'

But if you go to my relatives and they refuse to let her come, you will be free from your oath.'

"Well, when I came this very day to the spring, I prayed, "GOD, God of my master Abraham, make things turn out well in this task I've been given.

"When I came to the spring today, I said, 'O LORD, God of my master Abraham, if you will, please grant success to the journey on which I have come.

Gen.24.42

"And this day I came to the well and said, "O LORD God of my master Abraham, if You will now prosper the way in which I go,

Gen.24.42

"So this afternoon when I came to the spring I prayed this prayer: `O LORD, the God of my master, Abraham, if you are planning to make my mission a success, please guide me in a special way.

Gen.24.43

I'm standing at this well. When a young woman comes here to draw water and I say to her, Please, give me a sip of water from your jug,

Gen.24.43

See, I am standing beside this spring; if a maiden comes out to draw water and I say to her, "Please let me drink a little water from your jar,"

Gen.24.43

behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass that when the virgin comes out to draw water, and I say to her, "Please give me a little water from your pitcher to drink,"

Gen.24.43

Here I am, standing beside this spring. I will say to some young woman who comes to draw water, "Please give me a drink of water!"

Gen.24.44

and she says, Not only will I give you a drink, I'll also water your camels--let that woman be the wife GOD has picked out for my master's son.'

Gen.24.44

and if she says to me, "Drink, and I'll draw water for your camels too," let her be the one the LORD has chosen for my master's son.'

Gen.24.44

and she says to me, "Drink, and I will draw for your camels also,"--let her be the woman whom the LORD has appointed for my master's son.'

Gen.24.44

And she will reply, "Certainly! And I'll water your camels, too!" LORD, let her be the one you have selected to be the wife of my master's son.'

Gen.24.45

"I had barely finished offering this prayer, when Rebekah arrived, her jug on her shoulder. She went to the spring and drew water and I said, "Please, can I have a drink?'

Gen.24.45

"Before I finished praying in my heart, Rebekah came out, with her jar on her shoulder. She went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, 'Please give me a drink.'

"But before I had finished speaking in my heart, there was Rebekah, coming out with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down to the well and drew water. And I said to her, "Please let me drink.'

"Before I had finished praying these words, I saw Rebekah coming along with her water jug on her shoulder. She went down to the spring and drew water and filled the jug. So I said to her, `Please give me a drink.'

Gen.24.46

She didn't hesitate. She held out her jug and said, "Drink; and when you're finished I'll also water your camels.' I drank, and she watered the camels.

"She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, 'Drink, and I'll water your camels too.' So I drank, and she watered the camels also.

And she made haste and let her pitcher down from her shoulder, and said, "Drink, and I will give your camels a drink also.' So I drank, and she gave the camels a drink also.

She quickly lowered the jug from her shoulder so I could drink, and she said, `Certainly, sir, and I will water your camels, too!' And she did.

Gen.24.47

I asked her, "Whose daughter are you?' She said, "The daughter of Bethuel whose parents were Nahor and Milcah.' I gave her a ring for her nose, bracelets for her arms,

"I asked her, 'Whose daughter are you?'"She said, 'The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.'"Then I put the ring in her nose and the bracelets on her arms,

Then I asked her, and said, "Whose daughter are you?' And she said, "The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him.' So I put the nose ring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists.

When I asked her whose daughter she was, she told me, `My father is Bethuel, the son of Nahor and his wife, Milcah.' So I gave her the ring and the bracelets.

and bowed in worship to GOD. I praised GOD, the God of my master Abraham who had led me straight to the door of my master's family to get a wife for his son.

Gen.24.48

and I bowed down and worshiped the LORD. I praised the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me on the right road to get the granddaughter of my master's brother for his son.

Gen.24.48

And I bowed my head and worshiped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the way of truth to take the daughter of my master's brother for his son.

Gen.24.48

"Then I bowed my head and worshiped the LORD. I praised the LORD, the God of my master, Abraham, because he had led me along the right path to find a wife from the family of my master's relatives.

Gen.24.49

"Now, tell me what you are going to do. If you plan to respond with a generous yes, tell me. But if not, tell me plainly so I can figure out what to do next."

Gen.24.49

Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so I may know which way to turn."

Gen.24.49

Now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me. And if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left."

Gen.24.49

So tell me--will you or won't you show true kindness to my master? When you tell me, then I'll know what my next step should be, whether to move this way or that."
