Don't plant fertility Asherah trees alongside the Altar of GOD, your God, that you build.

Do not set up any wooden Asherah pole beside the altar you build to the LORD your God,

by going off to worship other gods, bowing down to them--the sun, say, or the moon, or any rebel sky-gods--

and contrary to my command has worshiped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars of the sky,

who has gone and served other gods and worshiped them, either the sun or moon or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded,

look at the evidence and investigate carefully. If you find that it is true, that, in fact, an abomination has been committed in Israel,

and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly. If it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done in Israel,

and it is told you, and you hear of it, then you shall inquire diligently. And if it is indeed true and certain that such an abomination has been committed in Israel,

When you hear about it, investigate the matter thoroughly. If it is true that this detestable thing has been done in Israel,

then you are to take the man or woman who did this evil thing outside your city gates and stone the man or the woman. Hurl stones at the person until dead.

then you shall bring out to your gates that man or woman who has committed that wicked thing, and shall stone to death that man or woman with stones.

If cases come before your courts that are too difficult for you to judge-whether bloodshed, lawsuits or assaults-take them to the place the LORD your God will choose.

"If a matter arises which is too hard for you to judge, between degrees of guilt for bloodshed, between one judgment or another, or between one punishment or another, matters of controversy within your gates, then you shall arise and go up to the place which the LORD your God chooses.

"Suppose a case arises in a local court that is too hard for you to decide--for instance, whether someone is guilty of murder or only of manslaughter, or a difficult lawsuit, or a case involving different kinds of assault. Take such cases to the place the LORD your God will choose,

Bring them to the Levitical priests and the judge who is in office at the time. Consult them and they will hand down the decision for you.

Go to the priests, who are Levites, and to the judge who is in office at that time. Inquire of them and they will give you the verdict.

And you shall come to the priests, the Levites, and to the judge there in those days, and inquire of them; they shall pronounce upon you the sentence of judgment.

Then carry out their verdict at the place designated by GOD, your God. Do what they tell you, in exactly the way they tell you.

You must act according to the decisions they give you at the place the LORD will choose. Be careful to do everything they direct you to do.

You shall do according to the sentence which they pronounce upon you in that place which the LORD chooses. And you shall be careful to do according to all that they order you.

The decision they make at the place the LORD chooses will always stand. You must do exactly what they say.

Follow their instructions precisely: Don't leave out anything; don't add anything.

Act according to the law they teach you and the decisions they give you. Do not turn aside from what they tell you, to the right or to the left.

According to the sentence of the law in which they instruct you, according to the judgment which they tell you, you shall do; you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left from the sentence which they pronounce upon you.

After they have interpreted the law and reached a verdict, the sentence they impose must be fully executed; do not modify it in any way.

Anyone who presumes to override or twist the decision handed down by the priest or judge who was acting in the Presence of GOD, your God, is as good as dead--root him out, rid Israel of the evil.

The man who shows contempt for the judge or for the priest who stands ministering there to the LORD your God must be put to death. You must purge the evil from Israel.

Now the man who acts presumptuously and will not heed the priest who stands to minister there before the LORD your God, or the judge, that man shall die. So you shall put away the evil from Israel.

Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel.

Everyone will take notice and be impressed. That will put an end to presumptuous behavior. [JC]

"When you come to the land which the LORD your God is giving you, and possess it and dwell in it, and say, "I will set a king over me like all the nations that are around me,'

"You will soon arrive in the land the LORD your God is giving you, and you will conquer it and settle there. Then you may begin to think, `We ought to have a king like the other nations around us.'

make sure you get yourself a king whom GOD, your God, chooses. Choose your king from among your kinsmen; don't take a foreigner--only a kinsman.

be sure to appoint over you the king the LORD your God chooses. He must be from among your own brothers. Do not place a foreigner over you, one who is not a brother Israelite.

you shall surely set a king over you whom the LORD your God chooses; one from among your brethren you shall set as king over you; you may not set a foreigner over you, who is not your brother.

If this happens, be sure that you select as king the man the LORD your God chooses. You must appoint a fellow Israelite, not a foreigner.

And make sure he doesn't build up a war machine, amassing military horses and chariots. He must not send people to Egypt to get more horses, because GOD told you, "You'll never go back there again!"

The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the LORD has told you, "You are not to go back that way again."

But he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, for the LORD has said to you, "You shall not return that way again.'

The king must not build up a large stable of horses for himself, and he must never send his people to Egypt to buy horses there, for the LORD has told you, `You must never return to Egypt.'

And make sure he doesn't build up a harem, collecting wives who will divert him from the straight and narrow. And make sure he doesn't pile up a lot of silver and gold.

He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.

Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself.

This is what must be done: When he sits down on the throne of his kingdom, the first thing he must do is make himself a copy of this Revelation on a scroll, copied under the supervision of the Levitical priests.

When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the priests, who are Levites.

"Also it shall be, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this law in a book, from the one before the priests, the Levites.

"When he sits on the throne as king, he must copy these laws on a scroll for himself in the presence of the Levitical priests.

That scroll is to remain at his side at all times; he is to study it every day so that he may learn what it means to fear his GOD, living in reverent obedience before these rules and regulations by following them.

It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the LORD his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees

And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutes,

He must always keep this copy of the law with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the LORD his God by obeying all the terms of this law.

He must not become proud and arrogant, changing the commands at whim to suit himself or making up his own versions. If he reads and learns, he will have a long reign as king in Israel, he and his sons. [JC]

and not consider himself better than his brothers and turn from the law to the right or to the left. Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.

that his heart may not be lifted above his brethren, that he may not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left, and that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his children in the midst of Israel.

This regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from turning away from these commands in the smallest way. This will ensure that he and his descendants will reign for many generations in Israel.

Deut.18.1

The Levitical priests--that's the entire tribe of Levi--don't get any land-inheritance with the rest of Israel. They get the Fire-Gift-Offerings of GOD-they will live on that inheritance.

The priests, who are Levites-indeed the whole tribe of Levi-are to have no allotment or inheritance with Israel. They shall live on the offerings made to the LORD by fire, for that is their inheritance.

"The priests, the Levites--all the tribe of Levi--shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and His portion.

"Remember that the Levitical priests and the rest of the tribe of Levi will not be given an inheritance of land like the other tribes in Israel. Instead, the priests and Levites will eat from the offerings given to the LORD by fire, for that is their inheritance.

But they don't get land-inheritance like the rest of their kinsmen. GOD is their inheritance.

They shall have no inheritance among their brothers; the LORD is their inheritance, as he promised them.

Therefore they shall have no inheritance among their brethren; the LORD is their inheritance, as He said to them.

They will have no inheritance of their own among the Israelites. The LORD himself is their inheritance, just as he promised them.

This is what the priests get from the people from any offering of an ox or a sheep: the shoulder, the two cheeks, and the stomach.

This is the share due the priests from the people who sacrifice a bull or a sheep: the shoulder, the jowls and the inner parts.

"These are the parts the priests may claim as their share from the oxen and sheep that the people bring as offerings: the shoulder, the cheeks, and the stomach.

You must also give them the firstfruits of your grain, wine, and oil and the first fleece of your sheep,

"So if a Levite comes from any of your gates, from where he dwells among all Israel, and comes with all the desire of his mind to the place which the LORD chooses,

"Any Levite who so desires may come from any town in Israel, from wherever he is living, to the place the LORD chooses.

he may serve there in the name of GOD along with all his brother Levites who are present and serving in the Presence of GOD.

he may minister in the name of the LORD his God like all his fellow Levites who serve there in the presence of the LORD.

then he may serve in the name of the LORD his God as all his brethren the Levites do, who stand there before the LORD.

He may minister there in the name of the LORD his God, just like his fellow Levites who are serving the LORD there.

And he will get an equal share to eat, even though he has money from the sale of his parents' possessions. [JC]

Don't you dare sacrifice your son or daughter in the fire. Don't practice divination, sorcery, fortunetelling, witchery,

People who do these things are an abomination to GOD. It's because of just such abominable practices that GOD, your God, is driving these nations out before you.

Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you.

For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD, and because of these abominations the LORD your God drives them out from before you.

Anyone who does these things is an object of horror and disgust to the LORD. It is because the other nations have done these things that the LORD your God will drive them out ahead of you.

Be completely loyal to GOD, your God.

These nations that you're about to run out of the country consort with sorcerers and witches. But not you. GOD, your God, forbids it.

"But any prophet who fakes it, who claims to speak in my name something I haven't commanded him to say, or speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet must die."

But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death."

But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.'

But any prophet who claims to give a message from another god or who falsely claims to speak for me must die.'

You may be wondering among yourselves, "How can we tell the difference, whether it was GOD who spoke or not?" Here's how:

You may say to yourselves, "How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD?"

Deut.18.21

And if you say in your heart, "How shall we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?'--

Deut.18.21

You may wonder, `How will we know whether the prophecy is from the LORD or not?'

Deut.18.22

If what the prophet spoke in GOD's name doesn't happen, then obviously GOD wasn't behind it; the prophet made it up. Forget about him. [JC]

If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him.

when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.

If the prophet predicts something in the LORD's name and it does not happen, the LORD did not give the message. That prophet has spoken on his own and need not be feared.

Another said he had just bought five pair of oxen and wanted to try them out.

"And yet another said, "I just got married and need to get home to my wife.'

Still another said, "I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.'

Another had just been married, so he said he couldn't come.

"The servant went back and told the master what had happened. He was outraged and told the servant, "Quickly, get out into the city streets and alleys. Collect all who look like they need a square meal, all the misfits and homeless and wretched you can lay your hands on, and bring them here.'

"The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.'

So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, "Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind.'

"The servant returned and told his master what they had said. His master was angry and said, 'Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the city and invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.'

"The servant reported back, "Master, I did what you commanded--and there's still room.'

"'Sir,' the servant said, 'what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.'

And the servant said, "Master, it is done as you commanded, and still there is room.'

After the servant had done this, he reported, 'There is still room for more.'

"The master said, "Then go to the country roads. Whoever you find, drag them in. I want my house full!

"Then the master told his servant, 'Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full.

Then the master said to the servant, "Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

So his master said, 'Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full.

Let me tell you, not one of those originally invited is going to get so much as a bite at my dinner party.'"

I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.'"

For I say to you that none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper."'

For none of those I invited first will get even the smallest taste of what I had prepared for them.'"

One day when large groups of people were walking along with him, Jesus turned and told them,

Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them,

Great crowds were following Jesus. He turned around and said to them,

"Anyone who comes to me but refuses to let go of father, mother, spouse, children, brothers, sisters--yes, even one's own self!-can't be my disciple.

"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters--yes, even his own life--he cannot be my disciple.

"If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.

"If you want to be my follower you must love me more than your own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters--yes, more than your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.

Anyone who won't shoulder his own cross and follow behind me can't be my disciple.

And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

And you cannot be my disciple if you do not carry your own cross and follow me.

"Is there anyone here who, planning to build a new house, doesn't first sit down and figure the cost so you'll know if you can complete it?

"Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it?

For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it--

"But don't begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first getting estimates and then checking to see if there is enough money to pay the bills?

Luke.14.29

If you only get the foundation laid and then run out of money, you're going to look pretty foolish. Everyone passing by will poke fun at you:

For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him,

lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him,

Luke.14.29

Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of funds. And then how everyone would laugh at you!

"He started something he couldn't finish.'

Luke.14.30

saying, 'This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.'

Luke.14.30

saying, "This man began to build and was not able to finish.'

Luke.14.30

They would say, 'There's the person who started that building and ran out of money before it was finished!'

Luke.14.31

"Or can you imagine a king going into battle against another king without first deciding whether it is possible with his ten thousand troops to face the twenty thousand troops of the other?

Luke.14.31

"Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?

Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?

"Or what king would ever dream of going to war without first sitting down with his counselors and discussing whether his army of ten thousand is strong enough to defeat the twenty thousand soldiers who are marching against him?

Luke.14.32

And if he decides he can't, won't he send an emissary and work out a truce?

Luke.14.32

If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.

Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace.

If he is not able, then while the enemy is still far away, he will send a delegation to discuss terms of peace.

"Simply put, if you're not willing to take what is dearest to you, whether plans or people, and kiss it good-bye, you can't be my disciple.

In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.

All we hear are the taunts of our mockers. All we see are our vengeful enemies.

All this came down on us, and we've done nothing to deserve it. We never betrayed your Covenant:
