Hear this word that the LORD hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying,

Listen to this, Israel. GOD is calling you to account--and I mean all of you, everyone connected with the family that he delivered out of Egypt. Listen!

Hear this word the LORD has spoken against you, O people of Israel-against the whole family I brought up out of Egypt:

Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying:

Amos.3.1

Listen to this message that the LORD has spoken against you, O people of Israel and Judah--the entire family I rescued from Egypt:

Amos.3.2

You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.

Amos.3.2

"Out of all the families on earth, I picked you. Therefore, because of your special calling, I'm holding you responsible for all your sins."

Amos.3.2

"You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your sins."

Amos.3.2

"You only have I known of all the families of the earth; Therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities."

Amos.3.2

"From among all the families on the earth, I chose you alone. That is why I must punish you for all your sins."

Amos.3.3

Can two walk together, except they be agreed?

Amos.3.3

Do two people walk hand in hand if they aren't going to the same place?

Amos.3.3

Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?

Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?

Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?

Will a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey? will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing?

Amos.3.4

Does a lion roar in the forest if there's no carcass to devour? Does a young lion growl with pleasure if he hasn't caught his supper?

Does a lion roar in the thicket when he has no prey? Does he growl in his den when he has caught nothing?

Will a lion roar in the forest, when he has no prey? Will a young lion cry out of his den, if he has caught nothing?

Does a lion ever roar in a thicket without first finding a victim? Does a young lion growl in its den without first catching its prey?

Amos.3.5

Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is for him? shall one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all?

Does a bird fall to the ground if it hasn't been hit with a stone? Does a trap spring shut if nothing trips it?

Amos.3.5

Does a bird fall into a trap on the ground where no snare has been set? Does a trap spring up from the earth when there is nothing to catch?

Amos.3.5

Will a bird fall into a snare on the earth, where there is no trap for it? Will a snare spring up from the earth, if it has caught nothing at all?

Does a bird ever get caught in a trap that has no bait? Does a trap ever spring shut when there's nothing there to catch?

Amos.3.6

Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?

Amos.3.6

When the alarm goes off in the city, aren't people alarmed? And when disaster strikes the city, doesn't GOD stand behind it?

When a trumpet sounds in a city, do not the people tremble? When disaster comes to a city, has not the LORD caused it?

Amos.3.6

If a trumpet is blown in a city, will not the people be afraid? If there is calamity in a city, will not the LORD have done it?

Amos.3.6

When the war trumpet blares, shouldn't the people be alarmed? When disaster comes to a city, isn't it because the LORD planned it?

Amos.3.7

Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

Amos.3.7

The fact is, GOD, the Master, does nothing without first telling his prophets the whole story.

Amos.3.7

Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets.

Amos.3.7

Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.

Amos.3.7

"But always, first of all, I warn you through my servants the prophets. I, the Sovereign LORD, have now done this."

Amos.3.8

The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who can but prophesy?

Amos.3.8

The lion has roared--who isn't frightened? GOD has spoken--what prophet can keep quiet? [JC]

The lion has roared- who will not fear? The Sovereign LORD has spoken- who can but prophesy?

Amos.3.8

A lion has roared! Who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken! Who can but prophesy?

Amos.3.8

The lion has roared--tremble in fear! The Sovereign LORD has spoken--I dare not refuse to proclaim his message!

Amos.3.9

Publish in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say, Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria, and behold the great tumults in the midst thereof, and the oppressed in the midst thereof.

Amos.3.9

Announce to the forts of Assyria, announce to the forts of Egypt--Tell them, "Gather on the Samaritan mountains, take a good, hard look: what a snake pit of brutality and terror!

Amos.3.9

Proclaim to the fortresses of Ashdod and to the fortresses of Egypt: "Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria; see the great unrest within her and the oppression among her people."

Amos.3.9

"Proclaim in the palaces at Ashdod, And in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say: "Assemble on the mountains of Samaria; See great tumults in her midst, And the oppressed within her.

Amos.3.9

Announce this to the leaders of Philistia and Egypt: "Take your seats now on the hills around Samaria, and witness the scandalous spectacle of all Israel's crimes."

Amos.3.10

For they know not to do right, saith the LORD, who store up violence and robbery in their palaces.

Amos.3.10

They can't--or won't--do one thing right." GOD said so. "They stockpile violence and blight.

Amos.3.10

"They do not know how to do right," declares the LORD, "who hoard plunder and loot in their fortresses."

Amos.3.10

For they do not know to do right,' Says the LORD, "Who store up violence and robbery in their palaces."'

Amos.3.10

"My people have forgotten what it means to do right," says the LORD. "Their fortresses are filled with wealth taken by theft and violence.

Amos.3.11

Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; An adversary there shall be even round about the land; and he shall bring down thy strength from thee, and thy palaces shall be spoiled.

Amos.3.11

Therefore"--this is GOD's Word--"an enemy will surround the country. He'll strip you of your power and plunder your forts."

Amos.3.11

Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "An enemy will overrun the land; he will pull down your strongholds and plunder your fortresses."

Amos.3.11

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "An adversary shall be all around the land; He shall sap your strength from you, And your palaces shall be plundered."

Amos.3.11

Therefore," says the Sovereign LORD, "an enemy is coming! He will surround them and shatter their defenses. Then he will plunder all their fortresses."

Amos.3.12

Thus saith the LORD; As the shepherd taketh out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear; so shall the children of Israel be taken out that dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and in Damascus in a couch.

GOD's Message: "In the same way that a shepherd trying to save a lamb from a lion Manages to recover just a pair of legs or the scrap of an ear, So will little be saved of the Israelites who live in Samaria--A couple of old chairs at most, the broken leg of a table.

Amos.3.12

This is what the LORD says: "As a shepherd saves from the lion's mouth only two leg bones or a piece of an ear, so will the Israelites be saved, those who sit in Samaria on the edge of their beds and in Damascus on their couches. "

Amos.3.12

Thus says the LORD: "As a shepherd takes from the mouth of a lion Two legs or a piece of an ear, So shall the children of Israel be taken out Who dwell in Samaria-- In the corner of a bed and on the edge of a couch!

Amos.3.12

This is what the LORD says: "A shepherd who tries to rescue a sheep from a lion's mouth will recover only two legs and a piece of ear. So it will be when the Israelites in Samaria are rescued with only a broken chair and a tattered pillow.

Amos.3.13

Hear ye, and testify in the house of Jacob, saith the Lord GOD, the God of hosts,

"Listen and bring witness against Jacob's family"--this is God's Word, GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies!

Amos.3.13

"Hear this and testify against the house of Jacob," declares the Lord, the LORD God Almighty.

Amos.3.13

Hear and testify against the house of Jacob," Says the Lord GOD, the God of hosts,

Amos.3.13

Now listen to this, and announce it throughout all Israel, "says the Lord, the LORD God Almighty.

Amos.3.14

That in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him I will also visit the altars of Bethel: and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground.

Amos.3.14

"Note well! The day I make Israel pay for its sins, pay for the sin-altars of worship at Bethel, The horned altars will all be dehorned and scattered around.

Amos.3.14

"On the day I punish Israel for her sins, I will destroy the altars of Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground.

Amos.3.14

"That in the day I punish Israel for their transgressions, I will also visit destruction on the altars of Bethel; And the horns of the altar shall be cut off And fall to the ground.

Amos.3.14

"On the very day I punish Israel for its sins, I will destroy the pagan altars at Bethel. The horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground.

Amos.3.15

And I will smite the winter house with the summer house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, saith the LORD.

Amos.3.15

I'll tear down the winter palace, smash the summer palace--all your fancy buildings. The luxury homes will be demolished, all those pretentious houses." GOD's Decree.

Amos.3.15

I will tear down the winter house along with the summer house; the houses adorned with ivory will be destroyed and the mansions will be demolished," declares the LORD.

Amos.3.15

I will destroy the winter house along with the summer house; The houses of ivory shall perish, And the great houses shall have an end," Says the LORD.

Amos.3.15

And I will destroy the beautiful homes of the wealthy--their winter mansions and their summer houses, too--all their palaces filled with ivory. I, the LORD, have spoken!"

Amos.4.1

Hear this word, ye kine of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, which oppress the poor, which crush the needy, which say to their masters, Bring, and let us drink.

Amos.4.1

"Listen to this, you cows of Bashan grazing on the slopes of Samaria. You women! Mean to the poor, cruel to the down-and-out! Indolent and pampered, you demand of your husbands, "Bring us a tall, cool drink!'

Amos.4.1

Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria, you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy and say to your husbands, "Bring us some drinks!"

Amos.4.1

Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria, Who oppress the poor, Who crush the needy, Who say to your husbands, "Bring wine, let us drink!"

Amos.4.1

Listen to me, you "fat cows" of Samaria, you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy and who are always asking your husbands for another drink!

Amos.4.2

The Lord GOD hath sworn by his holiness, that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that he will take you away with hooks, and your posterity with fishhooks.

Amos.4.2

"This is serious--I, GOD, have sworn by my holiness! Be well warned: Judgment Day is coming! They're going to rope you up and haul you off, keep the stragglers in line with cattle prods.

Amos.4.2

The Sovereign LORD has sworn by his holiness: "The time will surely come when you will be taken away with hooks, the last of you with fishhooks.

Amos.4.2

The Lord GOD has sworn by His holiness: "Behold, the days shall come upon you When He will take you away with fishhooks, And your posterity with fishhooks.

Amos.4.2

The Sovereign LORD has sworn this by his holiness: "The time will come when you will be led away with hooks in your noses. Every last one of you will be dragged away like a fish on a hook!

Amos.4.3

And ye shall go out at the breaches, every cow at that which is before her; and ye shall cast them into the palace, saith the LORD.

Amos.4.3

They'll drag you through the ruined city walls, forcing you out single file, And kick you to kingdom come." GOD's Decree.

Amos.4.3

You will each go straight out through breaks in the wall, and you will be cast out toward Harmon, "declares the LORD.

Amos.4.3

You will go out through broken walls, Each one straight ahead of her, And you will be cast into Harmon," Says the LORD.

Amos.4.3

You will leave by going straight through the breaks in the wall; you will be thrown from your fortresses. I, the LORD, have spoken!

Amos.4.4

Come to Bethel, and transgress; at Gilgal multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes after three years:

Amos.4.4

"Come along to Bethel and sin! And then to Gilgal and sin some more! Bring your sacrifices for morning worship. Every third day bring your tithe.

Amos.4.4

"Go to Bethel and sin; go to Gilgal and sin yet more. Bring your sacrifices every morning, your tithes every three years.

Amos.4.4

"Come to Bethel and transgress, At Gilgal multiply transgression; Bring your sacrifices every morning, Your tithes every three days.

Amos.4.4

"Go ahead and offer your sacrifices to the idols at Bethel and Gilgal. Keep on disobeying--your sins are mounting up! Offer sacrifices each morning and bring your tithes every three days!

Amos.4.5

And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, and proclaim and publish the free offerings: for this liketh you, O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

Amos.4.5

Burn pure sacrifices--thank offerings. Speak up--announce freewill offerings! That's the sort of religious show you Israelites just love." GOD's Decree.

Amos.4.5

Burn leavened bread as a thank offering and brag about your freewill offerings- boast about them, you Israelites, for this is what you love to do," declares the Sovereign LORD.

Amos.4.5

Offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, Proclaim and announce the freewill offerings; For this you love, You children of Israel!" Says the Lord GOD.

Amos.4.5

Present your bread made with yeast as an offering of thanksgiving. Then give your extra voluntary offerings so you can brag about it everywhere! This is the kind of thing you Israelites love to do," says the Sovereign LORD.

Amos.4.6

And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

Amos.4.6

"You know, don't you, that I'm the One who emptied your pantries and cleaned out your cupboards, Who left you hungry and standing in bread lines? But you never got hungry for me. You continued to ignore me." GOD's Decree.

Amos.4.6

"I gave you empty stomachs in every city and lack of bread in every town, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD.

Amos.4.6

"Also I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities. And lack of bread in all your places; Yet you have not returned to Me," Says the LORD.

Amos.4.6

"I brought hunger to every city and famine to every town. But still you wouldn't return to me," says the LORD.

Amos.4.7

And also I have withholden the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered.

Amos.4.7

"Yes, and I'm the One who stopped the rains three months short of harvest. I'd make it rain on one village but not on another. I'd make it rain on one field but not on another--and that one would dry up.

Amos.4.7

"I also withheld rain from you when the harvest was still three months away. I sent rain on one town, but withheld it from another. One field had rain; another had none and dried up.

Amos.4.7

"I also withheld rain from you, When there were still three months to the harvest. I made it rain on one city, I withheld rain from another city. One part was rained upon, And where it did not rain the part withered.

Amos.4.7

"I kept the rain from falling when you needed it the most, ruining all your crops. I sent rain on one town but withheld it from another. Rain fell on one field, while another field withered away.

Amos.4.8

So two or three cities wandered unto one city, to drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

Amos.4.8

People would stagger from village to village crazed for water and never quenching their thirst. But you never got thirsty for me. You ignored me." GOD's Decree.

Amos.4.8

People staggered from town to town for water but did not get enough to drink, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD.

Amos.4.8

So two or three cities wandered to another city to drink water, But they were not satisfied; Yet you have not returned to Me," Says the LORD.

Amos.4.8

People staggered from one town to another for a drink of water, but there was never enough. But still you wouldn't return to me," says the LORD.

Amos.4.9

I have smitten you with blasting and mildew: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the palmerworm devoured them: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

Amos.4.9

"I hit your crops with disease and withered your orchards and gardens. Locusts devoured your olive and fig trees, but you continued to ignore me." GOD's Decree.

Amos.4.9

"Many times I struck your gardens and vineyards, I struck them with blight and mildew. Locusts devoured your fig and olive trees, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD.

Amos.4.9

"I blasted you with blight and mildew. When your gardens increased, Your vineyards, Your fig trees, And your olive trees, The locust devoured them; Yet you have not returned to Me," Says the LORD.

Amos.4.9

"I struck your farms and vineyards with blight and mildew. Locusts devoured all your fig and olive trees. But still you wouldn't return to me," says the LORD.

Amos.4.10

I have sent among you the pestilence after the manner of Egypt: your young men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your horses; and I have made the stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

Amos.4.10

"I revisited you with the old Egyptian plagues, killed your choice young men and prize horses. The stink of rot in your camps was so strong that you held your noses--But you didn't notice me. You continued to ignore me." GOD's Decree.

Amos.4.10

"I sent plagues among you as I did to Egypt. I killed your young men with the sword, along with your captured horses. I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camps, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD.

Amos.4.10

"I sent among you a plague after the manner of Egypt; Your young men I killed with a sword, Along with your captive horses; I made the stench of your camps come up into your nostrils; Yet you have not returned to Me," Says the LORD.

Amos.4.10

"I sent plagues against you like the plagues I sent against Egypt long ago. I killed your young men in war and slaughtered all your horses. The stench of death filled the air! But still you wouldn't return to me," says the LORD.

Amos.4.11

I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

Amos.4.11

"I hit you with earthquake and fire, left you devastated like Sodom and Gomorrah. You were like a burning stick snatched from the flames. But you never looked my way. You continued to ignore me." GOD's Decree.

Amos.4.11

"I overthrew some of you as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. You were like a burning stick snatched from the fire, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD.

Amos.4.11

"I overthrew some of you, As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, And you were like a firebrand plucked from the burning; Yet you have not returned to Me," Says the LORD.

Amos.4.11

"I destroyed some of your cities, as I destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Those of you who survived were like half-burned sticks snatched from a fire. But still you wouldn't return to me," says the LORD.

Amos.4.12

Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel.

"All this I have done to you, Israel, and this is why I have done it. Time's up, O Israel! Prepare to meet your God!"

Amos.4.12

"Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel, and because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel."

Amos.4.12

"Therefore thus will I do to you, O Israel; Because I will do this to you, Prepare to meet your God, O Israel!"

Amos.4.12

"Therefore, I will bring upon you all these further disasters I have announced. Prepare to meet your God as he comes in judgment, you people of Israel!"

Amos.4.13

For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name.

Amos.4.13

Look who's here: Mountain-Shaper! Wind-Maker! He laid out the whole plot before Adam. He brings everything out of nothing, like dawn out of darkness. He strides across the alpine ridges. His name is GOD, God-of-the-Angel-Armies.

Amos.4.13

He who forms the mountains, creates the wind, and reveals his thoughts to man, he who turns dawn to darkness, and treads the high places of the earth- the LORD God Almighty is his name.

Amos.4.13

For behold, He who forms mountains, And creates the wind, Who declares to man what his thought is, And makes the morning darkness, Who treads the high places of the earth-- The LORD God of hosts is His name.

Amos.4.13

For the LORD is the one who shaped the mountains, stirs up the winds, and reveals his every thought. He turns the light of dawn into darkness and treads the mountains under his feet. The LORD God Almighty is his name!
