Peter invited them in and made them feel at home. The next morning he got up and went with them. Some of his friends from Joppa went along.

Talking things over, they went on into the house, where Cornelius introduced Peter to everyone who had come.

Peter addressed them, "You know, I'm sure that this is highly irregular. Jews just don't do this--visit and relax with people of another race. But God has just shown me that no race is better than any other.

He said to them: "You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.

Then he said to them, "You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

Peter told them, "You know it is against the Jewish laws for me to come into a Gentile home like this. But God has shown me that I should never think of anyone as impure.

So the minute I was sent for, I came, no questions asked. But now I'd like to know why you sent for me."

Cornelius said, "Four days ago at about this time, midafternoon, I was home praying. Suddenly there was a man right in front of me, flooding the room with light.

So Cornelius said, "Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,

Cornelius replied, "Four days ago I was praying in my house at three o'clock in the afternoon. Suddenly, a man in dazzling clothes was standing in front of me.

He said, "Cornelius, your daily prayers and neighborly acts have brought you to God's attention.

and said, 'Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor.

and said, "Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your alms are remembered in the sight of God.

He told me, 'Cornelius, your prayers have been heard, and your gifts to the poor have been noticed by God!

I want you to send to Joppa to get Simon, the one they call Peter. He's staying with Simon the Tanner down by the sea.'

It makes no difference who you are or where you're from--if you want God and are ready to do as he says, the door is open.

but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right.

The Message he sent to the children of Israel--that through Jesus Christ everything is being put together again--well, he's doing it everywhere, among everyone.

"You know the story of what happened in Judea. It began in Galilee after John preached a total life-change.

"You entered the home of Gentiles and even ate with them!" they said.

"'Never, Lord,' I replied. 'I have never eaten anything forbidden by our Jewish laws. '

The voice spoke again: "If God says it's okay, it's okay.'

So I ask you: If God gave the same exact gift to them as to us when we believed in the Master Jesus Christ, how could I object to God?"

And since God gave these Gentiles the same gift he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to argue?"

Hearing it all laid out like that, they quieted down. And then, as it sank in, they started praising God. "It's really happened! God has broken through to the other nations, opened them up to Life!"

When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, "So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life."

When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, "Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life."

When the others heard this, all their objections were answered and they began praising God. They said, "God has also given the Gentiles the privilege of turning from sin and receiving eternal life."
