I'm writing this to you, Timothy, my son in the faith. All the best from our God and Christ be yours!

On my way to the province of Macedonia, I advised you to stay in Ephesus. Well, I haven't changed my mind. Stay right there on top of things so that the teaching stays on track.

Apparently some people have been introducing fantasy stories and fanciful family trees that digress into silliness instead of pulling the people back into the center, deepening faith and obedience.

nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God's work--which is by faith.

nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.

Don't let people waste time in endless speculation over myths and spiritual pedigrees. For these things only cause arguments; they don't help people live a life of faith in God.

The whole point of what we're urging is simply love--love uncontaminated by self-interest and counterfeit faith, a life open to God.

The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith,

The purpose of my instruction is that all the Christians there would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and sincere faith.

Those who fail to keep to this point soon wander off into cul-de-sacs of gossip.

Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk.

But some teachers have missed this whole point. They have turned away from these things and spend their time arguing and talking foolishness.

They set themselves up as experts on religious issues, but haven't the remotest idea of what they're holding forth with such imposing eloquence.

They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.

desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm.

They want to be known as teachers of the law of Moses, but they don't know what they are talking about, even though they seem so confident.

1Tim.1.8

It's true that moral guidance and counsel need to be given, but the way you say it and to whom you say it are as important as what you say.

We know that the law is good if one uses it properly.

But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully,

We know these laws are good when they are used as God intended.

1Tim.1.9

It's obvious, isn't it, that the law code isn't primarily for people who live responsibly, but for the irresponsible, who defy all authority, riding roughshod over God, life,

We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,

knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

But they were not made for people who do what is right. They are for people who are disobedient and rebellious, who are ungodly and sinful, who consider nothing sacred and defile what is holy, who murder their father or mother or other people.

sex, truth, whatever!

for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers--and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine

for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine,

These laws are for people who are sexually immoral, for homosexuals and slave traders, for liars and oath breakers, and for those who do anything else that contradicts the right teaching

They are contemptuous of this great Message I've been put in charge of by this great God. [JC]

that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.

I'm so grateful to Christ Jesus for making me adequate to do this work. He went out on a limb, you know, in trusting me with this ministry.

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service.

And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry,

How thankful I am to Christ Jesus our Lord for considering me trustworthy and appointing me to serve him,

The only credentials I brought to it were invective and witch hunts and arrogance. But I was treated mercifully because I didn't know what I was doing--didn't know Who I was doing it against!

Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.

although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

even though I used to scoff at the name of Christ. I hunted down his people, harming them in every way I could. But God had mercy on me because I did it in ignorance and unbelief.

Grace mixed with faith and love poured over me and into me. And all because of Jesus.

Here's a word you can take to heart and depend on: Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. I'm proof--Public Sinner Number One--

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst.

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.

This is a true saying, and everyone should believe it: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners--and I was the worst of them all.

of someone who could never have made it apart from sheer mercy. And now he shows me off--evidence of his endless patience--to those who are right on the edge of trusting him forever.

But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.

However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.

But that is why God had mercy on me, so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.

Deep honor and bright glory to the King of All Time--One God, Immortal, Invisible, ever and always. Oh, yes!

keeping a firm grip on your faith and on yourself. After all, this is a fight we're in. There are some, you know, who by relaxing their grip and thinking anything goes have made a thorough mess of their faith.

Cling tightly to your faith in Christ, and always keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.

Hymenaeus and Alexander are two of them. I let them wander off to Satan to be taught a lesson or two about not blaspheming.

Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

Hymenaeus and Alexander are two examples of this. I turned them over to Satan so they would learn not to blaspheme God.
